i don't know what to do - cheri

  1. except what i've already done.

    4 weeks ago, i called human resources to find out how much sick leave, half pay i have left. 2 weeks ago still didn't have it so i emailed them a reminder and talked to the union who also reminded them, got a very sharp, almost nasty email in response. they said they will have the information by the end of this week. so i'm waiting.

    when i called them 4 weeks ago i also asked for them to send me disability retirement forms and they agreed to send them. in the nasty email i received from them, they refused to send me those forms, told me to get them myself from a website and to receive any other information i might need from other people.

    i feel that i've been blown off by the human resource department. i am contacting the union again and telling them what is happening to me. i am also requesting the name of our human resources director's boss (the director is the one blowing me off) in Albany,

    why isn't Human Resources assisting me? isn't that their job ?

  2. Yes, Cheri, that is their job. You are doing the right things to take care of you. Find out what your union rep has to say and go from there. Hang in there! {{{hugs}}}

  3. Cheri,

    I am afraid that you are caught in a nasty loop of age and economy.

    While the economy was not bad, my father and two other gentlemen who began working with the US Post Office back before the "privitizing" went through a similar bureaucratic run-arround. The NALC was not helpful either. These three men were repeatedly denied an employement upgrade from Temp to Career Carrier because the service wanted to be able to discharge them quickly if their health broke down. After the local supervisors and Superindentent of the mails got caught with their hands in the cookie jar so to speak (they were shown to have been improperly manipulating their reported promotion credits) the men got their carreer appointments and were then able to move up through the pay grades normally.

    As these men approached retirement age they were being pressured to just quit so their retirement would be drastically cut if not forfeited. My Dad was 64 when it got so bad he was having recurrent nightmares of killing his supervisor. We went to the Doctor who settled on a bad case of arthritis in his knee and retired him on physical disability on the grounds he would loose the use of the knee if he continued. 3 months short of 65 and he got 3/4 of the base pay of his grade which was more than his retirement would have been at 65. In other words they shot themselves in the foot.

    It sound to me like they want you to give up. Don't give up. Make them force retirement, spiff up your resume and apply for jobs with consulting firms. You could end up with your old job in a position of power.

    Consult with an attorney with expertise in this field. Stay away from your mom. Her fees are too steep.

  4. the big problem i'm having is that i'm running out of money. i'm spending $600 a month more than I'm taking in. and this is for basic basic stuff like rent. there are no frills. i've been doing this for 4.5 months. in 3 weeks i will be completely tapped out and i will not have any more resources.

    it did not help that i was on sick leave helf pay last year for 4.5 months and also spent more than i was taking in. my reserves have been going slowly downhill for the last year and a half.

    i need to know exactly when my half pay status will go to "no pay" (but i will still have a job). when "half pay" plus "no pay" equal one year, one is terminated...

    finding out 1 month before "no pay" status hits is not going to help me...
    Human Resources guaranteed me that they would notify me one month before that happened. Big F***ing Deal...

  5. Cheri, contrary to what you may think, HR is not there to help you; HR is there to protect the employer/company. Work with your union to make sure you get the information you need.

  6. I hope you are printing out both your emails and HR's answers. Also, you might want to forward their emails to your union. Like anything else nowadays, you need a good paper trail in case you have to pursue the case in court.
