Help gauging new kitten introduction

(4 posts)
  1. I recently acquired a new kitten from a friend who couldn't keep it. He is about 4 months old. My existing cat is about 9 months old and also male, but neutered.

I kept them in separate rooms over night, and my existing cat seemed interested in the smell of the new cat, sniffing the cat carrier the new cat came in.

He was wary about approaching the screen I put up in the door but after a few hours became more or less used to the smell of the new cat.

I decided that since my existing cat was not overly hostile, I would let them play this morning. They are currently running around the house chasing each other.

Every now and then there is a growl and a hiss, and they got in a cat tangle twice in the hour. There is very little hair raising and posturing.

My existing cat seems very interested in the new furball, and has ceased to hiss, but the kitten is growling and hissing at my existing cat when he is cornered or backed up into a wall. When he gets out of the corner they continue to chase each other back and forth. The new kitten is equally chasing my existing cat as vice versa.

Does this mean that since they are interacting more or less without too much hissing and spitting, that they are on their way to getting along and I can stop keeping the kitten in the "safe room"? OR have I pushed it too soon?

I need some advice from people who've already dones this sort of thing.

  2. addendum: My existing cat is not even interested in eating treats with the other cat around, and I have not seen him use the commode in the last day while the kitten is happily eating and pooping/peeing.

  3. It sounds like they are going to accept each other pretty quickly. However, I wouldn't leave them together unless you are home for a while.

If you only have one litter box for them right now, you might want to add a second box.

Make sure your first baby knows you still love him as much as you ever did. When the younger kitten is sleeping or when you have him in the safe room, play just with the older one. Pet him and give him treats when the younger one isn't around.

  4. Thanks for the reassurance, CB's Mommy. I've got two litter boxes set up, but the kitten has taken it upon himself to pee in both. I am planning to get him neutered as soon as the vet gives me the go ahead. I heard that cats can be neutered very young these days, but I live in Egypt, and apparently the vet won't operate until about 6-8 months.
