question about leaving kittens to roam the house

(9 posts)
  1. Ulysses & Gus are about 11 weeks now. Everytime I leave the house I put them in my spare room which is filled with toys, something for them to climb on, some open space (it's an empty room), food, water, litter, and some blankets and a bed. Sounds like a nice place to be while I'm at work. They sleep with me at night in my bedroom again with food, water, litter, something to climb on and some space.

I want to leave them to roam the house; however, there is ONE spot in my house I'm concerned about. When you walk in my house there is a foyer and it takes you immediately upstairs to where everything is. So the foyer is two stories high. There is a small ledge on the second floor that should a cat jump and slide off would fall all the way down.

This concerns me. Should I not be concerned? I've thought about putting a whole bunch of books and stuff there to block them from jumping up there - just not sure if that's a good/safe enough way to do it.

    Any suggestions?

  2. I used to have a two-story town house with the living room open to the roof---none of mine ever fell.

  3. Um, one time Ruggles chased Rotley right through the bannister in my townhome, and the lad fell a full storey. Rotley was very upset but completely unharmed.

Ruggles' penitence was suspect, and completely insincere.

  4. I guess I shouldn't be too worried then, huh? I'm the biggest worry wart. I'm trying not to be. The last thing I want is to come home to a hurt cat in the foyer :-(

  5. I like the idea that you're worried -- it shows you love the little beasts! They will be just fine, honey.

  6. Piling up books might make the area seem more interesting to the kits. Is the ledge on the other side of the railing or is it something they would have to jump to from the stairs? If it's just part of the stairs, you could try putting double sided tape on it so they wouldn't even want to walk on it.

  7. I thought piling up the books would make it more appealing to them also, but it was the only thing I could think of. The ledge is about three feet wide and about chest high. There is a big chair in front of it, so it wouldn't be hard for them to just leap to the ledge. I thought about moving the chair as well.

It's not part of the stairs or anything. It's just this useless ledge that's supposed to look interesting, I guess. I never liked it there -- now I have a reason, though.

The two like to race around and they always race over to that chair and I just keep thinking that one day they are going to race to the top of the chair onto the ledge and plummet. :-(

I also thought about putting up some brown paper, like from wall to wall, covering the width of the ledge. That way if they tried to leap they would just kind of deflect off. sounds pretty stupid, though.

  8. I wouldn't pile up any books. The only time my cats fall off anything is when they jump onto a pile of books and the books go everywhere and the cats scrabble for a solid foothold and usually fail. I like CBM's idea of double-sided tape. Moving the chair might help as well :)

  9. I've left the kittens to roam the house at night for the past two nights. I guess all is well, since they are both currently ok and nothing is out of sorts :-) This morning, however, Ulysses had his paws on that ledge. Of course I panicked. I'm going to have to get the double-sided tape.
