  1. Hi, my name is Karma. I'm a new army wife, and my husband is stationed in the middle of nowhere in Alaska. I decided to get a puppy and kitten to keep me company.
I've had the puppy (Bones) for about 2 weeks, and just got the kitten (Sulu) a couple days ago. He is 10 weeks old, and he was a rescue. His previous owners left him and his sister when they moved, so when people came to replace the carpet, they came running out of the closet, half starved. His sister got adopted right away, but I took him in a couple weeks later. he was very skittish at the shelter, so they told me to be very cautious. Well, he warmed up to me right away. He cries if I walk more than 10 feet away from him! He is the cutest thing, very vocal, and LOVES to cuddle.

  2. Hi Karma - welcome to TDK! Sounds like little Sulu had you all picked out to be his person! So glad you rescued him.

  5. Welcome to TDK! Sounds like you have things under control. Is there anything specific you need help with? There are so many with experience here that will gladly share what they know! Don't forget to check out other threads and jump in! It is like family around here. Don't worry about the middle of nowhere feeling--as a military spouse I can say you will not be there forever!

  7. Welcome to TDK Karma,Bones and Sulu. I'm guessing you're a Star Trek fan. How are Bones and Sulu getting on together.

  8. I posted about that under "cats & kittens". Sulu won't give the puppy a chance.

  9. Karma, don't fret, before you know it Sulu will be playing with Bones. At first its like any youngsters, gotta see who is established as 'boss' or the pecking order of things. As for being in the middle of nowhere, like Soxsmom said, it won't be long and then with your husband being in the Army you will move to a new 'middle of nowhere'....its all an adventure (I am retired Army myself and moved oh so many times during my 20 years).

  10. Thank you all. Luckily, my husband gets out for good in July, so this is the only place I had to move. I don't mind the middle of nowhere so much as I hate Alaska. I'm not good with the cold (I'm from California, and when it hits 50 degrees, I'm complaining), and in the winter here, it gets to at least -50 for about 2 or 3 months. It will also be dark all the time for a month or two. I moved here in July and had cabin fever by September. I'm hoping having the new babies around will help. Training the puppy definitely takes up time, and the kitten is great for cuddling when my husband's not around.

  11. Hi Karma and welcome. Love the names of your pets! I don't think we have any other TDKers in Alaska - do keep us up to date with the seasonal changes and the wildlife around you - I would love to hear more about where you live. I'm down the other end of the world in New Zealand and live a couple of hours away from JCAT. I have a siamese (Dara) and a tabby (Ringo). Feel free to join in the chat on the Cafe or Nightshift (NS) threads.
