  1. So what did this guy do to antagonize the cat? I doubt she'd just up and clump down on his arm for no reason.

  2. That's exactly what I thought.

  7. Yah he must have been teasing the cat. seriously. or he never got bit by the cat and he had some other allergic reaction and figured the cat was a good excuse so he could get money. What an idiot.

  8. Five million for a cat bite? Seriously? What bit him: a lioness?

  9. The owner was in the store the entire day and said no one mentioned a problem, I believe that if the cat had bitten the man in the store he surely would have made a scene, asked to speak to the owner/manager or something..sounds like he saw the cat in the store and likely teased a feral on the way home in order to make this ridulous claim...

  10. Oh brother. My sister got bitten - she volunteers at the shelter. She went to the hospital, was treated, and that was that.

  11. I wouldn't be too quick to burn the guy...I've been bitten by a few animals before...and the most recent time I was bitten by a neighbor's dog, I was simply locking my door on the outside. I was more shocked than anything--and you know what the dog's owner was doing? Talking on her cell phone like nothing happened. She made her daughter ask me if I was alright. If you had seen me at that moment, you'd have seen how startled I was. I didn't get angry or upset until an hour or two later, and that's when I called the cops. So expect that the man could have been in a similar state as mine--he wanted to see that he was in that moment not bleeding terribly, and he probably wanted to just get out of the store as soon as possible.

    - This man, from what I read in the article, was visiting the grocery store, meaning he wasn't an employee there and may have been (most likely) unaware that the store had any animal presence. He didn't "volunteer" to be in the presence of the animal, harmless or otherwise. Being bitten by an animal that you didn't provoke, didn't know about, or had no choice in interactions with it can make someone incredibly infuriated and quite hopeless--hence the large sum of money he's suing for.

    - He lost out on a month of work due to the incident, and we all know that right now is the worst time to be without work.

    - Hospital visits are extremely expensive, especially when they don't happen on your time.

    - The sum of money may/may not have been the idea of his attorney/legal council.

But on the subject of store owners having pets in the workplace.... I love pets, but I would never take them to work with me. I don't care if they were vaccinated or the most well trained pets around, you just shouldn't force that potential anxiety on your customers.

I visited a hobby shop a few months back in which the owner had her 2-3 rather larger dogs present. They startled us by running from under the counter and proceeded to stair at us until two of them began to growl. And then we had to listen to the owner's children yell at the dogs to do this or that. Now, personally I was I suppose, slightly agitated. But I like dogs so obviously I didn't say anything. But if I hadn't been fond of dogs, I might have gotten rather irate about it. Enough so to have left the store.

My girlfriend works in a sports store in the back, embroidering clothes--the owner keeps his dogs there often and she comes home covered in dog hair. Now I don't know if they go into the backroom and bother her while she's working as I haven't asked her that yet, but will, I think it's a bit inappropriate to have that sort of distraction for someone who's trying to work for you and help you out. They shouldn't have to worry about stepping on a dog's foot, or watch their sudden movements when they're on a hectic schedule.

Again, I love pets and I don't know the guy who got bit by a cat and he could very well be making mountains out of mole hills, but I just thought I'd share some alternate perspectives.
