  1. I adopted a 7 week old runt bengal that is only 13oz 36 hours ago the owner could not get her to eat my vet gave me Hills A/P kitten food and she has been eating a table spoon every 3-4 hours we were advised to also give her puppy replacement milk by the breeder which we have also done. All was going well until four hours ago and she now has diarrhea. What to do she seems week but not showing signs of dehydration...yet please advise on what to watch for and what to do?? Should we give her Pedialyte?

  2. She should be given KMR Kitten Replacement Milk not milk for puppies. They have different ingredients. I would immediately call your vet. Your vet knows what was prescribed and should be able to assist. Did the doctor find any problems at the visit? You can give Pedialyte, it seems to work well for dehydration.Remember their tummy is very tiny they need to eat often but not large amounts--seems like you are are the right path already.

Welcome to TDK and know that you have support here from many. May your little one recover quickly and begin to thrive under your love and care.

  3. First, bless you for taking care of this baby and I'm glad you came here for advice and support. People will be trickling in and offering help. I haven't had a kitten for many years but from what I've read pedialyte is an excellent idea. Welcome to TDK! We hope you'll stick around :)

  4. Hi, yes, give her pedialyte, as much as she will take, and call your vet for advice/take her in. Either vomiting or diarrhoea can be dangerous in young kittens because they can dehydrate and go downhill very quickly. If she seems limp and or unresponsive, get her to the vet ASAP. (If she accidentally aspirates or chokes on the pedialyte, gently hold her upside down until she stops.)

You could try a little Nutrical (a high-calory paste) or Karo corn syrup smeared along her gums/mouth -- not a blob, nothing she could choke on, it may give her a little more energy. I have no idea why the breeder told you to give her puppy replacement milk, Soxs Mom is right, she would need kitten replacement milk and solid foods (mixing them together to a sloppy consistency might make the solid food more attractive to her). If she doesn't want to eat, you could also try her on (Gerber) baby food, pure chicken, no additives or onion or anything.

Warm her food slightly, it makes it more appetising. Stinky foods, like fish, can also be more appetising to a sick kitty.

Are you keeping her warm? Very young kittens and sick kittens have trouble regulating their own body temp so they need a constant source of warmth, either your body heat, a heat pad, or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, with enough room to crawl off if they get too hot.

The usual test for hydration is the 'tent' test -- pick up a fold of kitten's skin and let go. If it snaps back, kitten is hydrated okay. If it goes back more slowly or if it stays up (tented) for a little while, kitten is dehydrated.

So, you need to keep her warm and comfy, you need to keep her fluids up and if she seems weak, I would want to get her back to the vet pretty quickly or at least ring him/her for advice.

  5. Thank you all for the advise, her temp. is 97degrees and the tent test is ok. We will stop the use of the puppy milk now, and replace it with pedialyte till morning when we can reach our vet. We have her in a draft free area of our home in a cage with a velvet blanket that see seems to love, but we dont have a heating pad, and we were concerned to use a water bottle through the night knowing it will cool off and could cause more harm than good.

  6. I have read several ways to help her stool up, raw meat, pepto, and rice with chicken. what if anything should or could I do tonight to help?

  7. Thank you for caring for this poor wee kitty DHS. I have a feeling that you will be checking her during the night so I wouldn't worry about the water bottle going cold as you can refill it then. With a towel wrapped around the bottle that will keep it warmer longer and also insulate her from it when it does cool. Sending Healing Energy for kitty. Soxmom & Jcat have given you great advice. welcome to TDK.

  8. MS is right about the hot water bottle and even if it does go cold during the night, as long as it's wrapped in a towel and there's room for kittie to crawl off if she thinks it's too cold, you're no worse off at that stage than if you hadn't put one in in the first place. (Roundabout way of saying I think it's probably better to have one.)

Try to get her to eat too, if you can. A little rice can help an upset tummy and warmed pure chicken sounds good (hence the babyfood suggestion). I have not heard of using Pepto -- I live in New Zealand and we don't have it here. I think I would stick with the chicken and rice, or the food the vet gave you for now, and ask him about other foods tomorrow. Good luck with your little one, Bengals are wonderful cats.

  9. The vet gave you a pretty good food. I think keeping a watchful eye and warmth are the very best until you can talk with the vet. Love the picture!
