Kitten Feline Leukemia - Please Help

(11 posts)
  1. Hi...My husband and I rescued 3 stray kittens at the age of 4 weeks. They are now about 14 weeks old. We found out about a month ago that they have feline leukemia. Two of them are doing great, but "Nibbler", not well. I took him to the vet last night (and several times before that) for bloody diarrhea. They have suggested yogurt, chicken, hamburger, flora forta and vitamins...all of which I have been using. Just got Pet Tinic last night from the vet because his gums are white and is anemic...does anyone else have any suggestions that would be helpful with my little one? He is not doing well today (from the anemia) and I'm afraid if I can't get him out of this slump we will have to say goodbye...

  2. Pet Tinic is a good start. Maybe little Nibbler will eat some liver? Keep him warm too. Good luck to you - you and hubby are angels!

  4. Vit B-complex, folic acid and Vitamin B12 are good for anemia, if you can get them into him in tiny doses. Also he needs lots of protein, very good for this condition. Stinging Nettles (leaf), dandelion root, and Rehmannia root also very good for anemia - you can get capsules in health food stores- pull them apart and use the powder inside in some food. Tiny doses of any of these would be beneficial. Poor little baby, hope he pulls through.

  5. I so totally know how you feel. Jack (the kitty in my avatar) had leukemia. They did EVERYTHING a dr could possibly do for him, he even had a blood transfusion the day before he died. The problem with the aneamia from leukemia is that your kitty's body is destroying the red bloodcells faster than he can produce (or utilise) them. So even with a transfusion, once the leukemia has reached that point, I personally think its kinder to put the kitty to sleep. Jack's last few hours were absolutely horrible. The vet had sent him home with us for the night so I could say goodbye. The next morning he couldn't walk anymore, he had no more control over his bowels or bladder. I didnt have transport to take him back to the vet till later that afternoon, and it was absolutely excrutiating to watch my boy die. At one point he wouldnt wake up anymore. When I did finally get him back to vet to have him put to sleep, our vet was kind enough to inject him through his kidney. That way I got to hold him while the vet was doing it (he was actually purring a little), and he never saw it coming, or felt anything. He just went to sleep in my arms. I would really in future insist on having my vet put any of my other animals to sleep that way. It was kindest thing I had ever seen anyone do for an animal - that he actually thought it through and found a way that wouldnt frighten Jack.
I'm really sorry for the situation you are in. I know the hard decisions that lie before you, and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

  6. Lysine is great for FeLV+ cats. The join felineleukemia.org. They are great and everyone there is going through this horrid virus. I know when Basil was diagnosed and Sox died I was devistated and needed help. They have the most wonderful advice and will let you know things to ask your vet. They are the only reason that Basil survived as long as he did with the virus. My prayers are with you.

  11. Got the Lysine and Vit B-Complex today. I'm mixing it with FortiFlora and Acidophilus, both of which he was already getting. I mix it with a small amount of warm water and have to give it to him orally via syringe throughout the day...and the Pet Tinic. He doesn't like the taste, but if it gets him back to him to normal it will be worth it. He did eat a little yesterday and today...his natural kiten food with a little bit of beef stock on it. Praying the Lysine will stop his running nose/eyes. I got laid off a few months ago, so I luckily get to keep a watchful eye on him almost contantly. He spends most of his time sleeping in front of the heater or laying on my me purring while his brothers run around. We appreciate everyone's advice/thoughts/prayers.
