why does my cat like to need his paws on our sides and on the blankets? he will need them till he lays down. i cant figure out why =/

It is very common. I call it "making the bed". Some call it "making biscuits". Kittens do this when they nurse to stimulate milk flow, so I think it comforts them.

Age really doesn't have much to do with it. We have cats that are 7 and 8 years old who still knead. It's sort of like twirling your hair or rubbing your fingers together - it makes them comfortable and happy when they knead.

Consider yourself lucky to have a kitty who kneads. I really miss having cats who do that. Cloud (my avatar) used to do that, and so did Salem, but they are gone to heaven now. Neither Jasmine nor Kensho knead. I find it a very affectionate thing for cats to do. And it's true: age has nothing to do with it. Cloud & Salem kneaded throughout their entire 12 years of life.
