  1. Shelly, great news, at this point the small things are huge. Will continue to send positive thoughts in your sons direction and keep you and your family in our prayers.

  2. Ann, thank you, but the news on that front is that they think at this point he will only lose soft tissue on his ears and nose, and that will eventually be rapaired with skin--what I would like to know though is if anyone in my TDK family has any information on the new techniques for growing skin--he has some viable areas for grafts but am more curious about that technique. As you can tell I didn't go to their house--I am really tired and decided to take a "me" day--gotta stay strong. I am sleeping pretty well, still having a little trouble eating but have been getting by on a lot of munchies (yes mom, SOME of them are healthy!). I forgot to tell you too, that when they debrided his chest and stomach they found that the damage was not as extensive as they first feared--still 3rd degree but not threatening any internal organs. Every little bit of good news is GREAT news as far as I'm concerned! Love, Shelley

  7. Shelley: I just picked up the thread. I am so sorry, but it sounds as if your son is a fighter. May God continue to walk with your son, his wife, his children, you, the doctors and nurses at the hospital and everyone who comes into contact with your son in moving towards his recovery.

  8. I am sorry I haven't kept up with all that is going on with your son, his wife and their family, Shelley. I am very glad that he opened his eyes, that his wife is so strong and able to see a little bit of humor and that you are all able to help clean up their house. I am really glad that Aflac will help them out and because of this, I may look into obtaining a policy with them as I am the sole provider of myself and two felines.

Sending continued prayers and healing thoughts for Larry (my step-uncle and step grandfather were both named Larry aka Lawrence).

  9. Shelley, you asked: "What I would like to know though is if anyone in my TDK family has any information on the new techniques for growing skin--he has some viable areas for grafts but am more curious about that technique."

There are a number of techniques used to increase the amount of skin available for grafts. One involves growing skin tissue of the patient in large petri-dish-type setups, which give surgeons largish sheets of tissue that's 100% compatible, but thin and fragile as wet tissue paper to handle. Another technique is to insert an air bladder under the skin of the patient where a large amount of skin is available and fairly stretchy; the bladder gets inflated slowly, over a number of days & weeks. When there's enough tissue, the stretched-out section is cut off and used for grafting.

Skin differs somewhat on different parts of the body, making it more or less suitable for grafting to different parts of the body. (For instance, to re-construct lips, skin from the upper inner thigh is sometimes used.) In all cases, the hardest part is making sure the graft takes, and also making sure the grafted tissue allows for sufficient movement of joints. Facial reconstructive surgery has come a LONG WAY, from just 10 or 20 years ago.

Shelley, please let me re-state how very relieved I am that your son continues to recover from his injuries! He will get through this difficult time, and I'm confident that you, his wife, and his entire family will help him along the way. Best wishes for his speedy recovery.

  12. Shelley that is such good news. The prayers will continue throughout his hospital stay and recovery. I am so happy for you all that he continues to improve and that the injury, although so severe, is not as bad as first thought. It takes a while sometimes before the extent of the damage can be determined...every little step toward healing and recovery is such a blessing.
