  1. Good evening, everyone!

Well, I don't know about you, but I really don't want to gain the requisite twelve pounds between now and the new year! So maybe we won't lose weight but I think a good goal is not to gain any this coming holiday season.

I really need to get back on the bandwagon and I do so much better with support. I can't always check in these days but I will try (and I've heard rumblings at work they may allow lunchtime internet surfing again...yay!)

You have all been such an inspiration and help to me in the past and I, for one, need a place to be accountable without being beat up, and this is the place...big smile.

So.... I am committing to getting to my new gym 2-3 times a week (more if I can) and walking at lunch time again, whether my walking buddy joins me or not. I commit to not wasting good food in my fridge. That's about all I can handle at the moment.

What about the rest of you?

  3. Yay Cheri! We can do this together!!!! Gosh, December 15th will be here soon, too! What number does he want your A1C to be to go back to work?

  5. I'm using this old thread to revive Thoroughly Dedicated Kits. I have been thinking a lot lately about juicers. I want to make my own fresh fruit juices. The ones at the store always contain so much sugar. Has anyone at TDK had experience with juicers or can you recommend a good one? I have always heard completely mixed opinions and of course websites always describe the one their selling as "the best". Do any of you use juicers? I have a citrus juicer and make fresh orange juice when I have a little extra time and it is soooo delicious!

  6. Karenopa has a Jack Lalane (?) juicer! Maybe she'll see this. Jeff was throwing everything into that contraption!

I'm glad to see the return of this thread. I hope that we can use this as a tool for motivating, and helping, each other rather than a site where we post personal performance stats. To do that is intimidating to some people because we are all working out, or hoping to work out, at different levels. The idea, I think, is not to toot our own horn, but to help each other start down the path of a healthy lifestyle.

It's been my experience in my long years of working out that works for one person doesn't necessarily work for someone else. The key is to find an activity that you really enjoy because otherwise, you simply won't stick with it. Also, to have a workout buddy is a HUGE help because just knowing that someone is waiting to walk with you, or run, or swim, or ride a bike, will get you out there.

Finally, don't set unrealistic goals. If you've never run before, or haven't run in years, it's just not realistic to go out and sign up for a 10K race. If you feel defeated and despondent when you first start exercising, you won't stay with it.

Thanks so much for reviving this thread, Krazikat. Now, let's help each other to get started!

  7. Thanks, Krazikat! Sorry, can't help with the juicer question. I know I've read that it's better to eat fruits/veggies than drink the juice; you get more vitamins & fiber that way.

I went to the gym today and did 35 minutes on the elliptical and 5 on the rowing machine. I'm trying to work back up to where I used to be, timewise. I also need to schedule my next swimming lesson. I was sooo frustrated I couldn't use the pool when we were in FL, but it was way too cold!

  8. Well I am joining in on this go-round. Nothing like getting diagnosed diabetic to get one motivated. My nutritionist wants me to stay on a "consistant" carb diet of 45 grams per meal and I am on avandamet 2 times a day. So far so good on not finding a justification to go how wild and pig crazy. I have worked out twice using my Wii and the EA Active module. I really want a Wii Fit, but everyone is out of stock around here. I have walked twice. I am also trying to count calories with the carbs which makes it challenging. My goal is to get off the meds and control the blood sugar with diet and exercise, but right now it is looking like a long uphill journey.

  9. No, no, Kykat - you can, and will, conquer this! One day at a time.

Have you looked on line for the Wii Fit? I wonder if Wal-Mart's on-line store or Amazon would have it in stock?

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  10. I have looked on-line, but prefer to get it at best buy if I can. I have a gift card to use for there and get reward points. I could go in and order it online from them, but their warehouse is out of stock too.

  11. So glad to see this back. I need the motivation for eating better. I have no problems with the exercising... paying a trainer will do that for you ! I tell myself no more junk food, but then get in 'a mood' and buy Frito's or ice cream or popcorn! ACK! I don't seem to be able to 'just say no.'

As for the juicer -- manfriend has one and he used it a quite a bit (before he lost his house and is now a roommate, and on top of that working in Texas again). He loved it ! As mentioned above though, the flavor and vitamins are great, but there is no fiber being consumed this way. I think if you balance juicing with still eating some fruits/vegetables it's not a bad way to go.

  12. I have a good friend and I am a bad friend! I had a 1 pound box of Godiva's that had been given to me. I brought them into work to share with everyone and get them out of my house. My friend Mary had a big box of clementines that she brought in to share in the spirit of healthier eating for the New Year. From my perspective Mary wins. From everyone else's perspective I win!

  13. Stoppping by for a Clemantine/have at home too and a piece of Godiva/none at home...I started my New Year's eating plan this week again...(please only 1 Godiva/the little flower shaped one!!!)Thanks Kykat!!!

  16. Good on you, Cheri, are you up very early or are you having trouble sleeping?

Posted 2 years ago by jcat #

  17. Thanks WWM FOR THE HEALTH THREADS...NO TO SALT/STAY ACTIVE/USE FLAXSEED!

Posted 2 years ago by jeankit #

  18. Trouble sleeping JCAT. The biologicals make me super tense and stressed. I don't get hugs or "I love you" anymore, in reality or email. All i get is their criticism. I slept the last 4 hours and got up an hour ago...

Posted 2 years ago by CSBM #

  19. I am so glad to hear about Mayor Bloomberg's campaign against use of salt! It's a shame it takes a politician to tell the restaurants what they already know is bad and to stop using it. =)

Posted 2 years ago by Karenopa #

  20. Good news guys. When I got on the scale this morning the number was LOWER!!!!!!! Woo Hoo! I went out for lunch with a friend and even though they accidently brought me the wrong lunch, (sandwich and fries instead of small steak and veggies) I ignored 90% of the fries and hit the salad bar big time and kept the dressing to a dull roar!

    Posted 2 years ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  21. going now to do 3 miles and watch "the doctors"

Posted 2 years ago by CSBM #

  22. done

Posted 2 years ago by CSBM #

  23. Yay, Kykat!!!!

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  24. Good job, KYK and Cheri! WWM, thanks for the articles.

I think I remember saying, when someone revived the healthy living discussion a while ago, that I was going to *not* focus on the scale, since my weight is perfectly fine, and focus on exercising to feel good. Well, Florida messed that up; we ate badly and the scale was up a pound and half when I came home on Saturday. But by today it was back to where it should be. Must have been too much salt :)

Tomorrow it's back to the gym and also get in touch with the swim instructor - I've got 2 more lessons to go!

Posted 2 years ago by Kilroy #

  25. Oh, Kilroy - you know that was water weight! I have to admit that I do weigh myself everyday but I don't pay much attention to fluctuations of a pound or two or three. As Mr. WWM always asks me when I fuss if the number has gone up, "Do your clothes still fit?".

I think that it's awesome that you're taking swim lessons! Swimming is a great exercise and so easy on the joints.

*puts on nursing cap* For those of us who are a bit chronologically challenged :-) please don't forget how critical it is for women to do strength training and weight lifting to maintain your bones! Besides, it's fun to have good looking arms!

  26. My mother sabotages any attempt I make at dieting/exercising. Its really frustrating. We never, ever have any snacks in the house, but the minute I mention I'm trying to lose some weight, she comes home with cookies and chips and ice cream . . . . She starts baking all my favourite cakes. What is a girl supposed to do in my situation? She is always complaining about the clothes I wear, saying I should tuck in my tummy, or that the dress is too 'tight', or that I should have gotten a bigger size. I'm confused.

Posted 2 years ago by Skyron #

  27. I love my swimming lessons! I just have to get the hang of swimming in a straight line so I stop crashing into the walls of the pool (ouch!). :) I can't walk straight, either.

Posted 2 years ago by Kilroy #

  28. I cant swim to save my life. I get sea-sick in the bathtub . . .

Posted 2 years ago by Skyron #

  29. Skyron, maybe try not telling your mom that you're watching your weight, so she doesn't have a chance to sabotage you (what a yucky thing to do). If you want to lose weight, you're doing it for you, not for her. Tell us, and we'll be your cheering section.
