two questions about 12 weeks kittens

(6 posts)
  1. My first question is how much exactly should they be eating per day. I feed them 3oz of Evo canned three times a day. There is dry down for them all day. The canned they get at 4am (that's what time I get up), 3pm, & 7ish. Sometimes they devour and I feel compelled to give them more. Is this ok? Am I feeding them enough.

Also, My little gus seems to be drinking a lot. Much more than Ulysses. He lays by the bowl, too. His pee is so much more massive than Ulysses' pee. Is this ok? I'm sure all cats are different and have different eating/drinking habits. I'm just wondering at what point should I worry about the somewhat excessive drinking. I have two bowls down for them. They probably go through one full bowl a day. Perhaps that's not too much. Not sure. Again, Gus is just drinking way more than Ulysses.

    Thank you.

  2. If it is hot in your (well for them at least) then that could cause him to drink more. My Jack used to drink alot of water as well. But he was also sick with a stomach virus. He never showed any signs of being sick at that point other than drinking alot. It could be the food, illness, disease, or just a very thirsty kitty. If you are a smoker you might want to watch the smoking directly infront of the kitty as well. It can cause the same symptoms that we humans get when we smoke dry throat, dry sinuses and things like that. If you are not sure the best thing is to take it to the vet. It is always better to be over worried than not at all.

  3. I thought about the heat as well, but it is never warmer than 70 degrees in here. Just today it was abnormally nice outside I opened the sliding glass door for them to get some fresh air through the screen.

This is what I've theorized about. The last few days Gus has acquired this habit of obsessively sucking at his paw pads. He has progressed from about 20 minutes to almost an hour of doing it before he crashes. I've googled this to learn that it's similar to a child sucking their thumb and if he is doing no damage to his paw pads or paw at all then not to worry about it. I've also read that a cat can lose just as much fluid from grooming as they do when they pee. I'm wondering if since he's got this new obsessive behavior of sucking at his paw for an hour that it's making him thirsty...hmmmm?

I'm planning on phoning the vet tomorrow just to ask. I want to make sure there is absolutely nothing wrong with him. Especially because he's going in soon to get neutered.

  4. Yes if he is sick then that will delay his neutering. I recently lost a kitten who seemed to be just fine other than the dislocated foot that he suffered a few days earlier. He was always drinking water as well. Be had an underlying heart condition and passed away last month. I hope that this new paw sucking is the cause. My Abby does kind of the same thing she sucks on the blanket though. She will do it for about 10 minutes at the most right before she goes to sleep as well. But she is an obsessive cat. AS well as a talker. I hope your little guy gets better. Is the thirst the only thing that is worrying you about him though?

  5. I was watching animal planet, program cats 101 saturday night and there was a lady and her cat was doing the same thing peeing a lot and she didn't know what to do so she took it to the vet and it turned out to be diabetic and now it is fine but has to have shots. Hope this helps you.
