Today in History (Nov 17)

  1. The United States Congress convened for the first time ever in Washington, D.C., on this day in the year 1800. Thomas Jefferson presided over the historic occasion as president of the Senate.

    Beset by ballooning costs and construction delays, the Suez Canal finally opened today in 1869. This famous canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and is one of the most important shipping routes in the world today.

  3. If Jefferson could see what has become of US Congress he would turn over in his grave. My hope for the future is that someday they can return to a productive branch of government that considers what is in peoples best interest.

  4. Here's a little timeline from info@EatTheState.org

    * Oct. 28th, 1970, William Fulbright, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, accuses Nixon Administration of conducting an illegal war in Laos without Congressional knowledge or approval.
    (What? You thought that Bush was the first?)

    * Nov.1st, 1963, (when I wuz' 9mo.old, incidentally, lol)
    S.Vietnamese military junta, after OK from US, assainates US-installed President Ngo Dinh Diem.
    (Hey Karzai, you paying attention?)

    * Nov 7th, 1972, After nine tries, Congres finally passes War Powers legislation over Pres. Nixon's veto. It limits President' mpowerto commit armed forces to hostilities abroad without Congrssional approval. It has routinely ignored ever since.
    (Aren't you glad that we live in a nation of laws?
