I just called my vet to order Wolfie's dry food for UTI. I can't recall who made it but it was called C/D I believe. The vet tech told me they have switched to Royal Canin. I seem to remember hearing something bad about it, or maybe I'm mixing it up in my head with Nutro? Anyway, I had gotten away from Wolfie's Cosequin regimen and his "special" food, lulled into a false sense of security because he has had no issues for months. Well, he was just hanging around in my office with me as I worked, and I was suddenly assaulted by a strong urine smell...I turned around and he had sprayed the wall at an impossibly high level while standing on the table that held my real estate files...yes, they are all sprayed as well. I scruffed him immediately and made my feelings clear. In the ensuing scuffle, the paper shredder was knocked over and there is paper all over the floor, then the phone rang and it was an annoying person I had been avoiding. Where do I go to start this day over?

Royal Canin Cat Food?

The c/d is Hills Prescription Diet, which I must have for Sheba. Why is your vet switching?

Yes, Royal Canin was involved in the original food recall. I also remember Hills Prescription for diabetic cats was recalled too. That's when I switched to KumpiKat, but Sheba has had a recurrence of the UTI problem so I started on c/d again.

Its Nutro that has a whole ton of recalls. Royal Canin has done pretty good with no recalls.
I wouldn't trust Nutro at all but RC has stayed pretty good for a while now :)

Your vet may have switched because the -/d foods are getting very expensive. That's all my four eat and I've been somewhat dismayed to watch it go from $25/bag to $60/bag in just 14 months. At first I thought my vet was trying to make too much money off the food, but now he orders 5 extra bags and I pay whatever his invoiced amount is. It knocks the price down to about $52/bag.
The vet says that one reason it has gone up so much is that they use only the type of protein listed. For instance, if the bag says "Chicken" that's what's in it. The protein doesn't change to turkey when turkey is cheaper.
If you read a label and it just says "protein" the same brand of food could change from turkey to beef to chicken during the year, depending of what is available.

I am using the Royal Canin food for my cats recorvery right now. She seems to be tolerating it well--no vomiting. I had not heard about a recall, but now I will be googling.
