Bobsky will be three in less than a month and over the last week or so, he has finally found his purr!
He's only ever purred while sucking his blankie and then only a little. Well, now he just purrs that deep, rumbly purr all the time.
Who would have thought I'd be so excited about a purr! And that it would take him almost 3 years to learn it!
Yay Bobby!

I love to hear kitties purr--nothing more calming having a purring cat in your lap. Max purrs so quitely that you can only tell he's purring if you have your hand on his throat. Cali purrs like motor boat--so different.
So, I'm happy that Bobby has found his purr. I don't think Max will ever have a loud purr, he's just a laid back cat. So, I'll have to get my purr fix with Cali. She's just beginning to trust me enough to lay in my lap and go to sleep--I've had her just 10 months now.Posted 2 years ago by MaxandCali'sMom #

hoo-ray for Bobby! Purrs are great. We do it all the time, even in our sleep, Huggs from Oliver and Sammy ...

Wow, it must be a loud purr that you can hear it from way out at sea. Seriously, do you think it might have anything to do with weaning him off the pheno?
Whatever the reason, I'm glad he's purring for you. It's such a wonderful sound.

Yay for Bobby. And how lovely for you to hear him purr now. Maybe since he became such a big hero at sea he has discovered it - or Susie could be right and its due to all the compliments he was getting on his speedos ;-)

It also took Patches 3 years before she purred. Isn't it the most wonderful sound?!

That's wonderful GD, I can see you and Bobby having more snuggle and purr time just so you can listen to him.
There's a film title in there GD, "How Bobby got his Purr".Posted 2 years ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

I'm not sure it has anything to do with the pheno since I started that at 1 1/2 years and never purred before he started taking it, either. However, he does seem to be feeling so good these days, coming off the stuff, that maybe generally he's just so content, he can't help himself.
I'm leaning toward the pink speedos, though :) -
Cats are such variable purrers! Our Sam had a purr that was almost a shout when he was especially happy or really hungry; you could hear it from three feet away. You can't hear Lady Coco's purr unless her nose is right in your ear. Sophie is working on hers but it's not very noticeable just yet (she's only two years old). So yay for Bobbie!

Purring is the most soothing sound I know. Pure contentment (ahhhh)
Hermes didn't purr much until he was about 2-3 years old. I kept thinking his purrbox was broken (lol) or needed the batteries changed. (right up under the tail is the battery insertion point)
Now he rumbles so loud sometimes it's funny. And the drool becomes almost a rain shower when he's ecstatically happy.
He's never been a lap-type cat, American shorthairs tend to keep to themselves, but Hermes is becoming a cuddlebug. He'll lay on me on night sometimes, and now I've been teaching him to 'spoon' with me. I'll come home from work and lie down next to him on the bed, and pull him toward my chest. He's usually very sleepy and lets me roll him over so his back is against me, and I'll run my arm up his tummy and scritch his chin. Then I see the feet start to make biscuits, the purr starts, and the drool begins. Happy Cat, Happy Mommy.

I like the ones that incorporate some extra sound into their purrs, almost like they are singing. So cute! Speaking of cute, in honor of Bobby's accomplishment, I will post one of my favorite TV moments: Star Trek NG's Data reciting a poem he wrote for his cat. The second verse is about purring, although I had to think about it before I realized that.
ODE TO SPOT
Felis Cattus, is your taxonomic nomenclature,
an endothermic quadruped carnivorous by nature?
Your visual, olfactory and auditory senses
contribute to your hunting skills, and natural defenses.I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
a singular development of cat communications
that obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
for a rhythmic stroking of your fur, to demonstrate affection.A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
you would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aide in locomotion,
it often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.O Spot, the complex levels of behaviour you display
connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.Data, "Schisms"
