What do these numbers mean?

  1. I just got my lab results back from a blood test I got with my checkup; my doctor noted that everything they tested for was normal, but my cholesterol is 243 mg/dL, my triglycerides are 131 mg/dL, my HDL cholesterol is 40 mg/dL, and my LDL cholesterol is 186 mg/dL. For anyone who routinely gets her/his cholesterol tested, what do those numbers mean: that was my first cholesterol test. I'm only 38: am I gonna die of a heart attack or stroke or something?

  2. Your total cholesterol is a bit high but what is more worrisome is your HDL/LDL numbers. You want your HDL to be higher and your LDL to be lower. The best way to do that is to eat "healthy" fats (olive oil, flaxseed oil and/or flaxmeal), fish, nuts. I'm not sure about the triglyceride number. That is usually connected with sugars and alchohol (it's a type of fat but those things increase it). I'm about to run out but I'll be happy to do some research for you when I get back later tonight. You aren't going to have a heart attack or stroke in the immediate future.

Watch those levels and turn them around while you are young. Diet and exercise are key.

Back off to the hospital. Surgery was okay, but not healing well. Infection set in and obstruction. Love to all.

  5. Vicki, I just got the same pattern of results with my recent checkup: total cholesterol 234, HDL 39, and LDL and triglycerides also out of whack but I don't remember the exact numbers.

As my ability to exercise with arthritis in both knees and bunions on both feet is limited, I've started modifying my diet. I'm eating salmon and have replaced the cream cheese on my bagels with peanut butter. Cholesterol is found only in animal-based foods.

  6. Vicki, if it's any help I am in the process of getting my HDL higher and LDL lower and my doctor and dietitian recommend about 8 nuts a day (almonds and walnuts/pecans) & 2 brazil nuts a day. Also avocado on toast at breakfast. It's working too. The best thing to do is have a low fat diet, check the nutritional panel on things you buy for total fat and saturated fat. I can't advise you what levels to look for as we measure our differently here but maybe someone can help with that.

  7. vickie your triglycerides are way to high, exercising will help to lower those, also I read somewhere that eating spicy foods will help lower that number. Excericing will also help to lower your LDL. Eating oatmeal is also supposed to be good for lowering total cholesterol.
I run all those tests on a daily basis here in the lab, as well as many others. Oh the joy of being a med tech, LOL

  8. Actually, Vicki's triglycerides are within a normal range. But losing weight and eating less simple carbohydrates will bring the number to an optimum level. But, as others have stated, your total chol, LDL and HDL need some work.

  9. Vicki, don't get discouraged, there are some fabulous things to eat that are good for you too. You may have to make them from scratch though -- do you have time to do that? If you want some recipes, let me know.

  10. JCat, I love cooking from scratch, but I don't always have all the ingredients I need; see, PH does the grocery shopping, and even if I go with him and let him know that we need healthier foods in the shopping cart, he tends to focus on pork, dark-meat chicken, and occasionally the cheapest ground beef he can get. It's as if he's feeding himself, and if I want to eat I either have to spend what little money I have left on food after paying rent, phone, and Internet or I'm stuck eating what he has. He's over 300 pounds, he's a Type 2 diabetic, and he doesn't seem to think that his diet and his eating habits (which consist of eating every serving of a 6- to 8-serving recipe by himself, for starters) are affecting his health. He complains of feeling sick all the time, but I can't make simple suggestions to him as to what to do to make him feel better because his other 'condition' (he has schizophrenia) tells him that other people are constantly running in our home and either poisoning him, stabbing him with needles, or drugging him up. I'm going to have to tolerate thie situation until I am able to save up enough money to move out.
