My new kitten is constipated

(5 posts)
  1. Hi all,
this is my first post here and I'm wondering if anyone has some suggestions for me.

I adopted a new kitten from a shelter a week ago, he was 8 weeks old. He was the runt of the litter and very skinny (though he's long haired it's hard to tell). The shelter told me to feed him dry food mixed with water as well as wet food often throughout the day. They also told me to make sure he didn't have diarrhea because I guess they had problems with him before having it.

Anyways, 2 days ago I noticed he hadn't pooped in a while and he seemed like he was in pain. He would try to poop, sitting himself on the ground and squeezing like he needed to, but nothing would come out. We took him to the vet and they had to put him to sleep to give him an enema because he was really badly blocked up. The vet got the huge blockage out and gave me a laxative and antibiotic to give him daily.

I've been giving him both and he was back to his old happy playful self after that experience. Today however, i noticed he hadn't pooped again and was having troubles like before. When I feel his lower abdomen, it feels like another large blockage. He doesn't seem to be in pain yet this time, but I am so worried about him. I called the vet and he said if he hasn't pooped today then bring him back in tomorrow. Later on in the day, he tried to poop again and I sort of helped him push out a bit of it. There is still more in there though.

I am wondering why the laxative isn't working and why he is having these problems. Does a laxative take time to work? Shouldn't his poop be soft instead of what feels like a hard nugget inside of him? (that's his name by the way, Nugget... I guess he's living up to it!)

Is there anything else I can do to make my little guy poop? I've tried rubbing/massaging his lower tummy and have been giving him all his meds :(

  2. You could try giving him a few drops of vegetable oil (eg mineral oil) in his food. But if he's already taking a laxative and antibiotics daily, I would be inclined to take him back to the vet. There are other things you can do -- check out the pink tags 'poop' and 'constipation' I've added in the top right hand corner -- you;ll find many previous threads on this subject. But those kittens weren't already taking laxatives, so it might be best to leave this one up to the vet.

  3. Oh, and if he's already having constipation troubles, I wouldn't give him dry food (makes him worse) and I wouldn't mix it with water, as it can then grow bacteria and make him sick. Stick to a good quality canned wet food, at least for now :)

  4. ok thanks!
i'm also worried he isn't getting enough water. I don't see him dirnk from his bowl often. When the vet saw him he needed fluids because he was really dehydrated. I have tried giving him tuna juice as someone suggested to me, but he didn't want it at all. I am able to give him water out of a glass sometimes, and i thought the water with the food might help but i don't know. I think another trip to the vet today is needed since he still hasn't pooped, yet tried to many times.

  5. one more thing, is it normal for there to be a large hard poop ball in his bowels when constipated? It feels like it might be too big to come out!
