My daughter and I adopted two kittens about two weeks ago. Dusti is 4 months old and loves to sit in our lap and purrs, but she also sucks our clothing like we are her mom. We think that this is cute and don't mind as we cuddle her, but I am concerned. I have never had a cat do this before. Is this normal or was she weaned too early? She seems to be very happy with us and the other cats in the house. She is playful, loving and a little bossy with the other kitten, who doesn't seem to mind. She was adopted for a week and then returned to the shelter before we adopted her. She was born at the shelter and kept in foster care. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

adopted Kitten still suckling

Hi Nano...Welcome to TDK!! Dusti could very likely have been weaned too early or even lost mama kit at birth. It's quite normal for any kitten to suckle during their kittyhood. Even kittens who nurse for a normal period of time can be known to suckle this way. Thank you for giving this little shelter repeater another furever family. Enjoy & God Bless!! =D

My two boys, Tiigger and Samuel, are about 8 months old now, and I've gotten them their own blankie to suckle on, because they started sucking holes into my clothes . . . They were both weaned too early, and I believe that's why they do it. They have their blankie, and every night when its bedtime they settle down with it an suck/knead on it till they fall asleep. Its very sweet to watch - they're like little babies!

Cheetahboy is about 8 years old and he still sucks on his blankie. Think of it as sucking on a thumb, or using a pacifier. It gives some cats a sense of contentment.

Nano, you might give the "rough 'n ready" toy a try:

Thank you all for your posts. I am relieved, I was afraid that she may have just been through too much with being in foster care and then adopted and returned. My daughter loves it went Dusti curls up with her and purrs, and sucks at her shirt. She calls Dusti her baby, which makes me "gramma". When we adopted Dusti, I was surprised to learn that she had been returned, they said that she didn't get along with the other kittens in the house. She is so loving and gives our one year Reggie a run for his money and then they curl up and sleep together. It seemed like she had adjusted very well to our family, but needed reassurance from others that this behavior was ok. Anncetera2, thank you for the link I will check it out. Again thank - you for your comments..

At night, my boy Sgt. Tibbs sucks on my earlobe and kneads the side of my head. He's over a year old now and he still does it every few days. When he was little he used to fall asleep with my earlobe in his mouth.
