Constant Diarrhea - 3 month old

(7 posts)
  1. Hello again,

It's me and my now 3 month old Scottish Fold, Ennio.

I've been having issues with Ennio's diarrhea for the past week and it seems nothing is helping. Today alone he's gone to his litter box to poop over 5 times. I've been to the vet last week and was prescribed metronidazole for 1 week to see if it would help. It hasn't really. Fecal tests have come back negative for parasites, but they're sending it off to the lab for a closer look of another possible ultra microscopic parasite. He's already been dewormed last month.

I was feeding the kitty Purina Pro Plan with a mix of Wellness wetfood. The vet gave me a new diet with Hill's z/d (dry and wet) with FortiFlora probiotics. I've started giving him some Pedialyte just in case, eventhough he's been eating and drinking water like normal, and is overall pretty active.

I'm just growing increasingly frustrated that his diarrhea issue hasn't been resolved since I got him. He had regular poop for one week after going on Clavamox for a different reason. But once he was off the antibiotics, he just went back to diarrhea. Could it be something he ate that I'm not aware of and that is irritating his bowels for this long? Is there a cheaper way to find out what kind of food would be best for him? Or what I should be feeding him?

It seems like every time I bring him to the vet, they all tell me that they can't find anything wrong with him. My bills are getting higher, but there's only so much one can pay!

  2. Oh I am so sorry Dahlia, it could be the food.. I know my friend who has a Bengal, can only feed her cat food that is not so rich with protein. One of those foods that is less good for her, but the cat couldn't take very high protein food. Try to gradually change kitties food to Hill's half new half old until finally its all new so it tummy can adjust and see what happens maybe?

  3. Have you asked the vet about giving him something like Imodium? Or Pumpkin? The vet would have to calculate the dose to his weight, but if you can get the diarrhea stopped for just a few days, it might give Ennio's intestines a chance to return to normal.

  4. You could try giving him some plain, unflavoured yogurt with live cultures - it might help to re-establish healthy gut flora. Here in SA we have stuff called flagil for diarrhea (used for human babies and animals) - I've seen something posted here before with a similar name, I'm almost sure its the same stuff; any way, it can be used long-term to help sort out intestinal problems, and its cheap. In my experience, that stuff has worked better than antibiotics, and inconjunction with synulox I've always had the problem resolved within 3-4 days.

I must wonder though - if this had been going on for so long, and your vets have excluded other possibilities like parasites etc, the only other 'causing' factor I can think of is food. Maybe you should ask the breeder you got him from what they fed him? Or you could get some samples of food from pet stores and vet offices and try him on it for a few days to see if it makes a difference? Best shot would be to try something labeled 'sensitive', it should make a difference within a day or two, if not, move on to another product.

  5. @Iliketea: It could be the food, although I'm feeding him what his breeder was feeding him. And she told me it was Purina Pro Plan, he didn't have any issues when I was feeding him the sample she gave me when I first got him. But it could be that he can't take in high protein diets, I hadn't really thought about that.

@Cheetahboymommy: I have never thought about giving him pumpkin and imodium. How do those things help in terms of digestion?

@Skyron: I looked up metronidazole and it's commercial name is Flagyl. They're little blue pills used for treating diarrhea. It's now day 6 w/ mentronidazole, and day 1 with z/d Hills dry food. His poop consistency has gone to soft stool (some progress!), and it's filled with little white grains, I'm guessing from the FortiFlora powder I'm sprinkling on. And he's pooping big (a good thing?).

If he is indeed intolerant to high protein, which brands (other than the prescription kind) is best to give after the treatment is done?

So far these are the brands I've tried:

    -Dry Food-
Hill's Science Diet for Kitten - gave him diarrhea
Purina Pro Plan - could be responsible for giving him diarrhea, original brand given by breeder
Innova Evo - Hadn't quite tried yet, but I still have the bag unused.

    -Prescribed Dry food-
Hill's z/d for kitten, so far looking better, his poo a brown-red (no blood, and not black digested, just earthy red) though. Said to be low allergen food.

    -Wet Food-
Wellness canned - Salmon and Trout, this is the only flavor he'll touch.

    -Prescribed Wet Food-
    Royal Canin Gastro, not interested
Hill's a/d, hated this at first but now loves this, but it's prescription only. Had given him one can when he was sick last month for another condition.

I'm really trying not to throw too many kinds of food at him since his stomach is still young and very sensitive, but when a brand doesn't work, I can't keep giving him the same thing, right?

Any tips of low allergen food will help! For now the kitty's comfortable and enjoying his newly bought heating pad for our cold Montreal winters ^_^

  6. The best food is one cats are made to eat: the raw diet. That's what I feed and with Panther, the farm cat with the worst allergies, it worked miracles.

All the foods you've listed (besides wellness, evo) that you've used I would guess are the culprits but not because of "high protein".

Corn, soy, by-products, wheat, are all high on the allergen list for cats. SD and purina are chock full of those AND very little meat which is the only thing a cat CAN digest.

Also, do not give any dry food to a cat with diarrhea at all. Dry food dehydrates the normal cat, imagine what it will do for cats with dehydration problems already! For one cup of dry a cat has to have a bit over 1.5 cups of water just to stay hydrated, more to keep the best water balance.

  7. UPDATE

    Hi Teresa,

You mean his diarrhea problem? Well after trying different food brands, the vet recommended I use Gastro by Royal Canin, it's a vet prescribed diet that's supposed to be easy on the stomach. It worked like magic for me, solid, non-stinky poop. My vet kept saying it's probably immature digestive system, so as the kitten grows older, it should have less digestive problems.

I kept him on it for about a month and finally switched to the regular kitten food by the same brand, Royal Canin. Dry food only. Apparently wet food doesn't sit well with him either. Try the switch and see what happens. I tried Science Diet Zed, but the poo was still soft.

    Good luck!
