Should I be concerned?

(2 posts)
  1. My kitten is around 5-6 months old now, and has started getting hairballs. Recently and often he has been making that "hairball sound" but nothing is coming up. I have found he has thrown up maybe 3 times in the last month. I don't really know if this is normal. He seems to do it often, a lot more than I have noticed with my past animals. Is it common for cats to throw up, and if so, that often? and do cats make that hairball noise and not cough everything up? could he maybe have something stuck in his throat that cause him to make that sound?

    thanks,

  2. Hi, LX, as long as everything else is okay with your kitten, I'm sure he's fine. Yes, cats do throw up a lot and they do throw up hairballs a lot and sometimes they try to throw up hairballs but can't quite make it. You could try adding a few drops of vegetable oil to his food, like salad oil or olive oil, to help lubricate the hairball and make it come out the other end. Or I think you can get a hairball remedy too, in the US, which might help.

Is he short-haired or long-haired? If long-haired, you need to be grooming him well every day and even if short-haired, some time spent grooming him every day would probably be fun for both of you and should help stop him swallowing quite so much fur.
