update on my FLUTD boy Joget

(17 posts)
  1. Hi everyone.. Just want to post an update on how Joe is doing...
He's overall doing very well... He eats well and plays well.
I clean his litter box twice a day, keep his cage and bed clean.
He likes to play chase with me :p, and always seems to win our races. It's good to see him run.

His kidney is also not visibly bloated anymore, though I suspect it is still swolen.

    Now on the bad side..,
He still urinates often. Little amount at a time. Gets me a bit concerned...
Plus, his poop is runny. Always runny since he came home from the hospital.
And he still has a lot of ulcers/sprue in his mouth.
I also noticed that he has black teeth...
I read in the web that black teeth can cause bacteria that can damage the kidney? Is this true? If it is, could it be that his teeth have been the culprit all along?

And joe loves the chicken that I give him daily. At first it was steamed chicken breast and liver. But now only the breast, because again, I read in the web that liver might not be good for cats with a kidney disorder. Is this true?

Thank you everyone... Pls pray for Joe's overall health... He's my soul cat :)
I just browsed through my pictures, and I found one of him as a tiny 3-week-old. :) so adorable...

  2. If you can get his teeth cleaned. Bad teeth does hurt the kidneys. Though I wonder if the black teeth are dead (do teeth turn black if they are dead)?

There is nothing wrong with feeding liver (or any other meat). Cats are cats and that doesn't change.

However you don't want to give to much liver as liver can cause the runs if giving to much.

  3. Another thought, could you not feed chicken breast and do some darker meat like chicken drumsticks or thighs?

The reason is that cats need to have taurine. Chicken breast is very low in taurine while the darker meat is very high.

  4. Hi, thanks...
Yes, actually I have chicken thigh... I give it to my little orphans. I was kind of afraid to give it to joe, because once again, I read that it is very high in protein, and too much protein is not good for kidney disease... Ah well..., internet is sometimes confusing :)

But yes, I'll give joget some thighs tomorrow, in addition to the breast.. :)

And what do you think causes the diarrhea?

    Thanks

  5. Bad teeth can indeed cause damage to liver, kidneys, heart and other organs. Why isn't Joe on a prescription diet? If all you are feeding is chicken that is not a proper diet.

  6. Actually, joe is on Royal Canin Urinary S/O and prescription diet c/d. I only give him the chicken once or twice a day. Small amount at a time :)

  7. Joe is now having a hard time peeing again. His litter box was a mess this morning, but no pee in it. I think he had been trying hard to pee.
He peed a little after I woke up. A little in the box, and a little all over the place. It was yellow with specks of brown (blood?) But not enough brown to get me worried about.
He ate and drank fine after that.
But now I think he is having trouble again. His litter box is a mess once again, no pee, and just a tiny bit of poop.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I notice joe never poop very much.. And the small amount he let out is usually runny.

    Thanks

  8. oh dionne! is there a vet specialist clinic nearby u can take Joget to? we have vets here who specialize in cats and dogs. this has been going on for far too long. there's got to be a proper diagnosis. only then can u treat him accordingly. i pray he gets better soon.

  9. Hi khom, thanks! I've been going to the same vet for 14 years.. And usually this vet is very good and accurate. I just don't understand why she can't treat Joget... :(
I've called another vet, I hope I can get Joe to see him soon... I still depend on my mom or dad to drive me there :(
Thanks for the well-wishing.. I'm wishing and trying hard for Joe too...

  10. hey Dionne, hw's Joget? masih sakit?

Posted 2 years ago by Khom #

  11. Heyyy.., you speak a bit of my language :p

    Yes, he's still ill...

I went to another doc before Xmas, and she explained about her method of treating FLUTD (I have a thread of it too, some of Vet B's methods differ from Vet A, and that got me confused)

Joe's health went down a little after that, but he got better. He was very well this morning.., ate well, and sprayed (I never thought I'd be glad to have a cat spraying in the house!)

But just tonight, he peed blood again. Just a little bit, but it got me worried... :(

  12. It sounds like he has a blockage, this is an EXTREME EMERGENCY! I lost my male Siamese because we were away for the holidays, only 2 days, and we came home to find him blocked; rushed to the vet at 9:00PM to get catheterized, but his kidneys were too badly damaged, had to put him down.

  13. Joe's been catheterized twice in the last 3 months. The vet don't want to do it to him for the 3rd time in such a short amount of time... She prescribed some medications for him, and put him on prescription diet.

He's been on and off on the blood-peeing, but he's otherwise strong and healthy...

How bad was your cat's kidney damage? Joe's xray showed a huge kidney, but now it has reduced in size. Still swolen, but not as bad.

I just hope we can maintain Joe's condition... And see what happens in a few weeks...

  14. There is a surgery to widen the urethra so he passes any crystals in the future since it seems it can't be controlled. He might already have scar tissue which is making the tube even thinner. I have heard of good results with this. I have had several cats with the disease so I did a lot of research. Ask your vet about it. My cat's kidneys stopped functioning at all. He would have had to have dialysis the rest of his life and constant IV's--no quality of life, so I let him pass.

  15. Dionne: yup, i speak malay fluently :) We learn Malay in schools here in Malaysia.
On another note, i think SMIP knows what she's talking about especially since she's had cats who've had similar problems. perhaps you could ask your vets about the alternatives she spoke about?

  16. Oh, I didn't know you're in malaysia. Good, at least someone's in my time zone! :D

Yes, I'm planning on going to the vet after he comes back from year-end holiday. Although I'm pretty sure this kind of surgery will cost a ton :(. But we'll see.., at least I want to make sure what options I have at this point.

    Thanks for replying :)

  17. Kidneys can be damaged badly in kittens. I lost my Basil a little over a year ago--complete kidney loss. He also had feline leukemia though. Just be very careful and my prayers are with you.
