Advice for a new kitten in a very small apartment

(6 posts)
  1. My boyfriend and I just rescued a 7 week old kitten from a shelter a few days ago and he is as sweet as can be. However, my boyfriend lives in a very very small studio apartment in NYC and works from home. I leave for work every morning but he is left with the kitten. Unfortunately the kitten will not leave him alone and constantly needs his attention. He climbs all over him and his computer and desk and my boyfriend is having difficulty getting anything done. We bought toys and made beds for the kitty but we are worried because the apartment is so small that he does not have enough to keep him occupied. Any advice?

  2. what about some kitty dvd's ? also there are toys out there that release a kitty treat when played with. and you could also get another kitty and they would play with each other and leave your boyfriend alone...

  3. We have a 3 year old cat and a 3 month old kitten in a 2 bedroom apartment. Is the bathroom a decent size? Perhaps you could put him in their with his toys, food, litter, and a "bed" for a bit. Also, with a kitten that young you are going to need to play with him a lot to tire him out, but then he'll sleep for a bit when your boyfriend can do work. Laser pointers and feather "cat dancers" are good for tiring a kitten out with little effort on the human's part.

As for walking on the computer. I have the same problem. I just picked the kitten up by the scruff of the neck when she's walking my laptop and put her on the floor and firmly say "no." You have to do this several times but I think my kitten get it now? Also, a cat climber thing will give the kitten more space to explore, too, but the kitten will likely prefer playing with its "humans" and other pets in the household.

Also, getting a second kitten is recommended because the kittens can keep each other company and entertain eachother. Many rescues and shelters won't place a single young kitten into a household with no other cats. But then again, a second kitten would mean more food, litter, and vet bills.

  4. please also remember that kitties live in vertical space too. square footage of an apartment is not an issue because kitties get up on things like furniture and cabinets and cat climbers. they truly live 3d so another kitty would not be a problem in terms of space...

  5. He's just a baby and is needy--this will pass as he gets older. When he gets annoying, as said above, scruff him, but also hiss like a momma cat would---he'll get the idea.
