leaving a 3 month kitten alone for 24 hours?

(5 posts)
  1. Im going away for 24 hours, and I'm wondering if my kitten will be alright by herself. Daily, Im away from approx 8am - 8pm, and she's been fine. I've stayed away for 5 days, but had someone able to come by and check on her, and Sabbi was a doll. This time, I wont be able to have anyone check up on her.

I'll be gone from approx 10am to mid afternoon the following day. Her box will be clean before I leave, with extra kibble and water left out. Same with her toys, and I'll leave a radio on as well. All the extra rooms in my apartment will be closed, so she'll only have the main area to roam (how it is normally anyway). I'm also unplugging my tv (so the wires arent live, since she likes to chew). Will she be alright, or is there anything I'm forgetting? Any advice would be welcome! :) I'm really nervous about leaving her alone unsupervised.

  2. I wouldn't leave a kitten alone for that long, normally, but if it can't be avoided she'll be okay. Leave more food than you think she'll need and more water too. In fact, leave water in several different containers in case she dumps one over.

Does someone else have a key to your place? In case you get stuck away from home, will you be able to call someone and have them check on kitty if it becomes longer than 24 hours?

Also, play with her a lot right before you leave so she gets some good exercise. Does your telephone message machine record so it can be heard in the house? If so, you might want to call kitty a couple times and talk to her. Tell her you miss her and will be home soon.

In the future, a good place to check for cat sitters is at your vet. Lots of vet techs and vet office staff work extra hours as cat sitters. One of the advantages of using a vet employee as a cat sitter is that the kitty and the sitter already know each other.

  4. Thanks for the response, CBM! Sabbi told me though shortly after I posted that it may not be the best idea - she got tangled by her TEETH on the bottom of my venetian blinds! O_O

I know that something can always happen while Im away at work, but if something was to happen while I was away for those 24 hours I wouldnt be able to forgive myself. So I convinced the people that Im staying with (one of them is allergic) to let me bring her with me. She's staying in one room, but its big, so she has plenty of space to roam. She also has her spare litter box, food dishes and favourite blanket and toys, so its not completely unfamiliar. I've checked up and played with her a few times, and she's doing fine; not stressed at all. So its all worked out for the best. :)
