grrr high cost and stupid people wanting unaltered kitties

(20 posts)
  1. Ok, I have been calling around to vets and the cost quote is very high. I am going to ask people if they could ask their vets for an estimate of fixing and vaccinating this cute little polydactle. With the cost being $200 for fixing alone, I swear if i had the money I would keep the kitten after its fixed and given shots.

what is kinda urking me is the high cost. if it wasnt so high probably more people would get their cats fixed! Geeze! what is with vets???

the other thing that is really peeving me greatly is people responding to my add wanting a free unaltered kittie and I question them on the unaltered... saying if i got it fixed and it was still free... they dont want it fixed cause they think it would be cool to have black kittens. I told off one person that emailed me. This kitten was likely an unwanted litter so why do you want to create more litters?

    Oh i am not pleased.

I did set up a paypal account. its a personal paypal account but I dont know how to share the pertinent info (do I just give my email that links to the account so other paypal users can help out)

Sammi is completely adjusting well to being in my household. I almost wonder if i could get away with having an extra cat. I think we are only allowed to have 2....

sigh. I just need to vent a little.

  2. I don't know about Canada, but here we have several low cost spay and neuter clinics. One local vets brings in a spay and neuter van 4-5 times a year. It is very low cost and run by a lot of volunteers. A vet and assistant perform all the surgeries and the volunteers do all monitoring and registering. Also shots are given free. We normally can complete 30-50 spay/neuter in a 10 hour day.

  3. here we don't, and our shelters are all packed with unwanted pets. Makes me want to write letters, but I haven't a clue who to write to.

I will see if the place I got Kizzie from can pull some strings again. Problem is I am trying to compose a letter asking them about inexpensive places in my new city... without making it seem that I dont have a vet for my cats.

Maybe I can also set up where I could be an available foster should they need one.

  4. Oh, I thought you did decide to keep Sammi? I must have missed something. I agree, if you DO spend that much money on him/her, to just keep him/her. I know the cost may be more cause the vet never saw the kitty before and a check up will have to be done first. Breaks my heart to hear that the shelters are filled with unwanted pets. :`( poor little things.
All you would need to give kitty is the Rabies shot for now I think. Unless your laws are different there? Kitty is kinda young to get fixed, no?
Good luck, hope it all works out for you. It would be very hard for me to give a kitty away.

  6. I emailed the hamilton animal welfare and I also put their charity in the cause I created on facebook. I want to sponser Sammi so Sammi can stay here where she belongs. She belongs with me. Their vet cost is lower. I can get someone to drive me to their vetrinarian and the cost is lower then my local place. I was kinda on the fence with trying to decide weather to find Sammi a home or keep her but with the replies I got about wanting an unaltered cat and other sillyness I think keeping her is the only way to go.

I think with paypal you can just add the person's email to say what account you want to donate to if your wanting to help through my own paypal account but on facebook the charity is the Hamilton Animal Welfare Association.

Sammi is gonna be staying. Specialy after the emails about wanting to breed a black kitten... shudder.... I think Doxie and Kizzie want this little one too. Doxie has come more out of her skittishnes and Kizzie has someone to keep up with and play with.

I am going to keep Sammi. Its the only thing to do. I have all ready had her a month. She is an important part of my home now.

  9. KittenMaster is pretty opposed to donation requests, you could send the information to those on the card list with a message telling what is going on. I know that in the rules he may delete posts that contain this information. It doesn't seem to be that he is against anyone helping anyone here, it just can make things uncomfortable so we were asked to do this off site.

  11. Chey KittenMaster knows you have been around for quite awhile, and he is very understanding. I just think you will get more help by sending an email.

  13. I was gonna suggest the same thing about emailing the info to all of us. We help each other here with our furr family. We used to have a TDK fund just for that purpose, but now that we have each other's emails, we can connect that way instead. :) Good for you for kepping the sweet baby girl. Yes, it's the only way to be certain that she'll be safe and cared for. You just never know. I am SO happy now!

  14. Chey, I see that you did check with a local shelter. Our local Humane Society does offer lower spay/neuter fees. You can also check with different vets. When I took Zorro in, I was charged $170, which included the initial exam, tests, vaccinations, and the neuter. I thought that was pretty fair for everything. I don't know if they gave me the "multiple cat discount" :-)

  15. I am going to go with a vet that is just up from where I did part of my placement. Ive heard good things about them and animal welfare association where i adopted Kizzie did email me, the letter will be forwarded to the lady I normaly talk to but they also recommended this vet in my city.

  16. I'm glad you decided to keep Sammi. I agree that pet care costs can send us all reeling and wreck havoc with any household budget but those sweet purrs just make it all worth it.

  17. A lot of animal shelters and rescues either run their own spay/neuter clinics or sell/give away vouchers for area vets to do spaying and neutering. I got a voucher for my kitten to be spayed for $40 US and my vet was participating so we are just getting it done there (that included the surgery and an overnight stay).

Is there just one kitten? I didn't realized that when I wrote my first post. I would like to donate by all my extra income is going towards my little kitten.

  18. Chey doesn't live in the USA.

  19. yah I dont have the cheap vet/neuter stuff here and until recently there was actualy a fee for surrendering a pet, even if you "claim" you found it abandoned.... That might have changed since I was in highschool years ago...
