Does anyone have a cat who has/had cancer? Any advice?

  1. Tom's son has an 11 year old cat, Oreo, who was just diagnosed with breast cancer. The vet was telling him about the possibility of Oreo's quality of life not being very good after surgery, etc. Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation?

  2. Dee, Max just had surgery in the end of September, and his cancer was very aggressive and came back the beginning of December with a vengenance. Not all cancers do that, but his did and that is why I helped him crossover the bridge. He was fine for about 2 months after the surgery, which was major they took out a baseball size tumor from his right side. My vet was very truthful about everything, he thought he had gotten it all with the first surgery but it turned out that just a little tiny bit was enough to cause so much hurt and pain to Max. I didn't do radiation or chemo because they thought it was gone, at least he is pain-free now and lived until he was 16 yrs old.

  3. That must have been so awful for you and Max, Deb. Thankfully, Max led a charmed life with you and is no longer in pain.

  4. He did lead a good life with me and the crew, he was my favorite and knew it. My big shy boy, he never used his size to bowl over the others and would just walk away whenever someone wanted what he had.

  8. Dee, First let me start by saying I'm so sorry for Tom Jr. and his kitty. The only experience I have that is simillar is Mr. Bug and the facial tumor. But the tumor went undetected for too long and by the time it was diagnosed it was too late for any chance of successful surgery. My boss however has a dog that had breast cancer and had surgery and that was almost 2 years ago, the vet has told him that it's more a matter of when the tumors return than if and at that time he would recommend helping him to the Bridge. But he has had almost 2 years so far and seems very happy and pain free.

    For now I will pray for Tom Jr. and I have lit a candle!

  9. Dee...the only experience I've had w/cats & cancer were not not good endings. I had a beautiful white cat show up at my doorstep one day several yrs.back. I named her Bunnybecause that's what she looked like. I don't know how long she had been lost but,it had been awhile. She was starving. Within a month,she had warmed my heart & become an indoor kitty. There wasn't a cat she didn't like. From the time I brought her in tho,she had scabbing on her ears & nose. I knew it was cancer just by looking at it. I was heartbroken by the second month because I had no choice but to help her over the bridge. Within just 1 month,the cancer had taken her entire nose.
    I know...an awful story. But I also know that it's almost impossible to cure cancers in cats. And there is always a pain factor involved. They're just good at hiding that pain.
    My Prayers are w/Tom's son & his kitty.

  10. We had the same experience w/Hootie. He was really acting normal until one day I noticed he had trouble breathing but after napping, he seemed fine. Well during the day it was worse and we cook him to the vet where he had a seizure and the Vet found a huge tumor pressing on his lungs and it was cancerous. We immediately heloped him over the bridge and cancelled our vacation. My prayers are with you all too. I lit a candle. {{Dee}}

  11. Dee, I'm sorry about Tom's cat, Oreo. My Tigger had squamous cell carcinoma. I even took him to a specialist in the city, which was very costly, but I didn't care, I didn't want to lose him. There was nothing they could do, I kept him for 4 months after that visit, which is about the time the vet said he had. I know I should have helped him to the bridge sooner, but I couldn't bear to lose him, selfish on my part, but when I made that decision, I KNEW it was the wisest and only choice I had. It is never an easy thing to do, so my heart goes out to you all. {{{DEE}}}

  15. Our cat Charlie, developed cancer in his sinus cavities. We always teased him and said he had a "snotty" nose. In reality, he was having trouble breathing but we didn't realize that. The vet was able to remove part of the tumor to open up the airway so he could breathe better. Eventually it ate away his nose and into his eye socket. When he got to that point, I was blessed with getting to escort him as far as I could in this life and pass him off to the Wolf. Funny thing is I always got to do that with my mom's cats. Four actually. I pray for Oreo and his papa, its never easy.

  20. Years ago, my cat Keph succumbed to cancer of the liver. It was hard to diagnose, and he showed few symptoms of illness (occasional vomiting) until the very end, when he became jaundiced, weak, and stopped eating.

    He spent almost a week at a veterinary college in Manhattan, KS before a definitive diagnosis was found; that's how rare liver cancer is in cats. (Cats can apparently regnerate most of their liver.) Treatment was unlikely to be successful, even if using surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.

    We drove down to see him that one final time, to hold him and comfort him one last time while the lethal dose was administered. It was heartbreaking, but having him die due to starvation, dehydration and/or toxic blood would have been worse. I miss him, to this day.

    Catnip was his Very Favorite Thing Of All Time, so he was buried in a large bed of catnip, to help remind me of his pure bliss when alive and enjoying catnip.

  21. My kitty sister, Darlene, had stomach cancer. The tumor was removed surgically and she was given one chemotherapy treatment, which she handled well. Before she could get another treatment, though, her one functioning kidney failed and she had to be helped to the Bridge. She'd had a history of crystals in her urine, and I somehow think that she may have recovered if her kidneys weren't already compromised. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see what would have happened.

  22. Our tuxedo, Two Cents, developed a tumor on his shoulder. We had it removed and he lived for another 2 and 1/2 years after the surgery. The vet told us that the cancer may return, so we weren't surprised when we felt another tumor in the same spot. Another few months went by and we finally helped the big guy over the Rainbow Bridge. I'm so glad we got that much extra time with him.
