Good news for Athens cats

(24 posts)
  1. Here's a couple of bright developents for the abandoned Athens cats. That piece in the Banner-Herald about the cats' being euthanized tomorrow apparently lit a fire under prospective adopters. As of yesterday, many adoption applications had been submitted. When I stopped by the shelter yesterday, they were very busy. People were looking at the cats, and some of them chose cats on the spot. (One woman called to someone in the waiting area, "We got number 17!") I also heard a volunteer telephoning someone to say that they now had room for a cat whom the person wanted to surrender. This afternoon, the rest of the people whose applications have been approved are to go to the shelter to choose their cats. I think those who have already been spayed/neutered will be able to go home today or tomorrow; the rest can leave after their surgery. While I was there, I completed an application myself and stated on it that I wanted them to contact me if the life-or-death situation arose in which a cat would be euthanized for lack of a home. I had asked my landlord on Friday if he would object to my bringing in a third cat, and he said he didn't "think it would make any difference". The volunteer said that she was pretty sure the socialized cats would get homes; there was less interest in prospective outdoor cats and barn cats, though.

The other good news is that the perpetrator surrendered to authorities and has been charged with 50 counts of animal cruelty. Here's the link to the Banner-Herald's story about that.

  7. I am so glad to hear that!

  8. Of the 42 cats rescued, 27 have been adopted and 15 still need homes. Here's the latest from the Athens Humane Society:

No one has contacted me yet, so I assume no one's been slated for euthanasia. Today I put up notices from the Humane Society about this in both of the break rooms at work.

  9. Even better--I just called the Humane Society and the person with whom I spoke said that fewer than 15 cats still need homes, and they are still processing applications. It looks like everyone just might get homes after all.

  11. The news keeps getting better, folks! Have a look at the latest from today's Athens Banner-Herald:

About the four euthanized cats: On the day I was at the shelter giving treats to the group of six, an animal control officer brought in another cat. While she was there, she mentioned to the shelter employee that at least one of these cats was becoming weaker and should be euthanized after the rabies quarantine was over. They were probably euthanized because they were in poor health, not just because they got scared and bit someone. So far, I haven't been contacted about adopting anyone, so the applicants thus far must have been serious.

  14. Do you know how many are left at this moment? I actually live in Athens, Georgia, and although my roommate just got a kitten and I have my own also, I'd be willing to buy a cat or two some time.

  15. Eileen...Thank you so much for the update...I do think they should quarantine the guy that did this awful thing. He shouldn't be aloud to roam around himself

  16. Unfortunately, Susie, the guy who did this is out walking around, free on a $1000 bond for misdemeanor charges. And, Tany, although the numbers seem to change every so often, I think that 42 cats ended up in the Humane Society's custody. That would leave, as of yesterday, 9 cats still to be homed. I think, though, that they're looking for permanent placements at this time.

  17. At least it's working out well for the cats. It's wonderful news that so many have come forward to give them loving homes.

  18. Here's the latest news direct from the Humane Society. Only 3 to 5 cats do not yet have officially confirmed homes, but applications to adopt them are being processed. These are unsocialized cats who need positions as barn cats. Today about half of the adopted cats are being spayed/neutered, and they will go to their new homes over the weekend. Another group will have their operations on Tuesday and will go home next week.

  21. Eileen, thanks for the update(s) on this situation, you have done a wonderful job keeping track of it. Glad that most of the kitties have made it to good homes, shows there are more people out there w/good hearts.

  22. Eileen, the fact you cared makes the world a better place. Thanks goodness for people who care. Because it makes a huge difference, one cat at a time.

  23. I agree with Jo, Eileen. Stories like this make all of us want to rescue them all. The fact that my home has 7 furs that are all rescues or adoptions attests to that. And mine is a small houseful, isn't that so, Elene, Brandilee and Susie, to name a few?

  24. Sharon in Austell...I wouldn't say you have a small brood. Two 2-leggeds & 7 4-leggeds make for a very crowded home. I have 6 adult cats inside & 2 seperate litters of kittens. I originally kept them seperate until they could all get their shots & would be healthy. But,noone has wanted Thumper & Spider because they're black. The other litter haven't been spayed & neutered yet(going on 6 mos.old). Because I can't let them run free, except when I let them out to play & exercise a couple hrs.a day, they're forced to stay in cages inside. I don't know what I'll do if the one female Misty Blue comes into heat.
Trust me,you don't have a small brood of Fuzzbutts...BTW...how's dragonwing? Haven't seen him post in awhile.
