I think Ailuromanic was referring to the fact that when kittens have kittens, it's sometimes more difficult than when a mature cat is delivering. It sounds like your mother's pregnant cat is less than a year old. Did we read that wrong?
If the mama cat is full grown, she should be okay without a vet's help unless one of the babies gets stuck. But if the mama cat is small or young herself, she may run into problems.
No two deliveries are the same, just like people. Some cats just pop out the babies like there was nothing to it, some take longer. And, each kitten could have a different father and therefore a slightly different conception date. A few breeds of purebred cats often need C-sections.
Keep an eye on mama cat. If she seems to be in distress, take her to the vet. If she just seems to be taking her time, but otherwise comfortable then just stay close by.
The one thing you want to avoid is losing mama cat which means you will have a lot of hungry little kittens to hand raise.
