  6. I am praying for you and Gizmo. Do ask about the sub-q fluids. They extended our Redford's life by a good 2 years and he was 18 yrs. when he finally passed.

  7. Katthays, I'm so sorry to hear about Gizmo's situation. I was wondering if you might be interested in checking out what the FIV sites have to say about CRF? Us FIV mommies are thouroughly paranoid about our kittens health situations, I'm sure you will find a ton of information there about all the latest treatments, diets, drugs, supplements, anything and everything. I'm not very clued up on technology, and i have difficulty navigating this site, but they do have files on all the issues pertinant to FIV cats, of which CRF is a major issue when they get older. I hope if I post the link for you that you will be able to find your way through the very complicated technological mish mash that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me . . .

  9. At least Gizmo is acting happy and normal, take some comfort from that - I'm sorry he's poorly though, give him some gentle scritches from me.

  10. Thanks everyone! And I will check out that site, Skyron! The vet puts Mo at approximately 8-10 years old, so he really isn't an old cat. He sure has come to life this afternoon, acting more like his usual self :) Poor guy has a section on both front legs shaved and on his neck! Huh? I will cherish him everyday, more than ever, if that is possible. I know this is progressive and fatal, but for now, he seems happy, which I have to take comfort in :)

  11. With the right medication they can go on for years Katthays - Mum's cat Bones was on kidney tablets for over 5 years.

Posted 2 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  12. Really, MCW??? The vet said he had 'significant kidney failure' And what are the tablets you speak of please? The only thing the vet is doing is putting him on a special prescription dry food and also some rhubarb supplement pills 2x a day.

  13. I can't remember how severe Bones' condition was when he was first diagnosed...of course that will have a bearing on it.

The tablet's name (here in the UK anyway) is Fortekor, and it's a daily one. Definitely worth checking with your vet, here in the Uk it costs about £20 for a month's supply.

  14. Thanks so much!!!

  15. Fortekor is a brand name for benazepril, which is a hypertension drug. Brand name in the US is Lotensin.

Here's some info from Drs. Foster and Smith http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=0+1303+1464&aid=3212

  22. Did your vet give you any idea about a plan?

  23. K, Don't panic! I can't remember if you were with us when Wilbur was diagnosed. It was almost 2 years ago, stage 3 kidney failure. To make a really long story short. Wilbur is still here, still loving life and still in stage 3. He is doing so very well. He and T-Do chase each other up and down the stairs, he runs around the house and loves his cuddles. He does take daily meds, potassium citrate and fomodine two time a day and eats Royal Canin Renal Diet and Science Diet kd both dry. I did get a water fountain to promote lots of drinking and it works like a charm. They all drink much more water than from a bowl. This diagnosis is not a death sentence!!! I know that it can be so frightening but with care, good vet care and lots of love the outcome can be suprizing. I will be praying, holding good thoughts and sending encouragement to you and sweet Gizmo. Hugs to you, be brave and love your kitty.

  25. Really hope Gizmo will live a long, full, and happy life with you, Katt! :)

  26. I'm just not sure if katt will be able to access this, its a yahoo group, and I think you have to be a member to get in. I could always copy & paste the info and send it to you?

  27. SM, I am not crazy about this vet at all, she seems to have marked him for death already, is only prescribing a dry food for him, that's it, oh and that rhubarb extract called Rubenal 75. Wow, that is such good news, PuddyTat!!!!! And stage 3 already, another WOW! I posted Gizmo's numbers on the first page....the vet said they were 'bad'. I am also interested in the other meds that Wilbur is taking and I will definitely check into that! Thank you all so much for the kind words and info!! Skyron, I will see if that link works...
