Get a second opinion. He could live many years with proper medication and diet. He sounds like he's not that bad if he is acting so good.

Yes, got it Skyron, I sent you one back, thank you!! And yes, I am switching vets, Mo has an appt. on Monday at 9:00 with the new vet. Actually I know him well, used to take animals to him, not even sure how I got mixed up with going somewhere else! And now, I have heard not good things about this vet I took Mo to for his teeth cleaning! I hope Mo forgives me, he will be afraid, but it's for his own good :)) Thank you all!

Katt...sending lots of Positive Thoughts for You & furbaby Gizmo. I'm so glad your getting the second opinion. You need to feel that your vet is caring for your pet as if they were their own.
Crossing all paws that the second vet can ease your worried mind & keep Gizmo happy & healthy for a lomg time to come!

Katt good luck on the new vet. My former Maine Coon was very sick and I rushed him to the emergency vets one night. They got the fever down and got him stabilized, wrote up their diagnosis and said to see my vet in the morning. My vet totally blew off their charts and insisted that there was nothing much wrong with my cat. That afternoon we were at a different vets who did full blood work, saw evidence of problems with his liver and kidneys related to the fever and dehydration and started treatment. He spent the next 5 days at the vets office during the day and home at night. The correct treatment got everything back in the normal range and he lived for years. A good vet can work miracles!
Definitely switch food and incorporate wet food into his diet. The more fluids the better. Please keep us posted on Gizmo.

K, Switch vets now! Do you live close to a school of vet med? Don't you dare give up! Wilbur is such a joy and I am blessed for everyday he is with me. At this moment the "very sick kitty" is chasing the kitten up the stairs! I will try to find my folder with all of his records to check his numbers and compare them to Gizmo's. This will be a challenge since I "cleaned" my study and "filed" everything. When you find a new vet be sure to ask him about the potassium citrate and fomodine. The potassium citrate is an anti-acidifer and the fomodine is to keep his stomach from becoming upset. They told me at the vet school that he would eat the potassium citrate like a treat. RIGHT! No way, so I crush it up and dissolve it in water and squert it in to his mouth with a 3cc syrenge. He does not mind at all. Also try to get him to drink, drink, drink water. It is very good for him. Have them check his blood pressure also. It is pricey but is a good indicator of how things are going. Does he have stones in his kidneys or bladder? If they are in his bladder and lots of them, surgery is an option. Please don't give up. This is not a death sentence. We love Gizmo and are holding him close in our hearts along with you too.

K,
Forgot to suggest you check out Tufts University website and Cornell University too. Some good info. Wilbur looked so odd when he came home. He had no fur on any leg (pulled out this IV's), he had abdominal surgery (shaved on both sides) he looked like he had a Mohawk! So sweet and so cute. Wilbur was barely 5 years old when he was diagnosed. It was very odd that such a young kitty should have kidney failure. Wish I could hold your hand. Every day you spend with him is a plus. Wilbur has only one functioning kidney and the other is so bad. He has about 15-20 % function and is doing great. Peeing, pooping and loving his siblings and me of course. Everytime he goes in the cat box I scoop, so I can keep tabs on his output. It has worked out great for us and allows me to keep track of his "business". Love ya, PuddytatPS...sorry did not mean to run on so long. I just don't want you to believe that there is no hope! As long as he is eating, peeing, pooping and loving on you...well, put that in the plus column!

Thank you so much for all the info.....I apologize for resurrecting this thread again, there is something strange going on with Mo....and the same thing happened to him after his first teeth cleaning he had a few years ago....he "twitches", his tail goes crazy, his front leg kicks out, he shakes his head, and he tries to run from it...he has been in the basement....it is obvious he is uncomfortable or hurting, yet he will eat if I bring him food and he purrs and I can love him up, and he loves it when I hold him....he did have 2 teeth pulled this time, but I was not given an antibiotic for him, isn't that odd? It is like he has a reaction to either the anesthetic or the teeth cleaning stuff. It is so strange and I am soooo frustrated! It is like he is being zapped with electrical impulses. And the fact that this has happened both times to him after the cleaning!

Kat, I would call for the vet clinic first thing this morning. Poor baby, I know it is confusing him too. Did they possibly give him an antibiotic shot instead of pills/liquid for the dental work?

Deb, I didn't see anything on the invoice for an injection of antibiotic....I am so frustrated, I hope the new vet can figure this out, no one seemed to know the last time this happened either, and it lasted quite a while, but then it did go away!!! I am going to get dressed and try calling the new vet, don't know if they will be able to get me in or not, but I won't go back to the vet that cleaned his teeth.

Katt, that is too scary, I would be having my brain turning over if it was any of the crew. May the new vet get you in today, somebody has to have an answer.

Katt, I wish you the best of luck in getting the answers for your boy. I agree that having the same reaction both times seems to point to something. Possibly Mo is allergic to the stuff they used to clean his teeth? Glad you're doing all you can to get answers. My thoughts are with you and Mo~!

Thank you Siobhan.....I actually had forgotten about his reaction last time to the cleaning, but when he started acting weird last night, it brought it all back....YES! Called the new vet and I am taking him in at 11 today! An hour from now.....talked with the assistant, she thought it was very strange that they did the teeth cleaning BEFORE the blood work....let me tell you, I have since heard bad stories about the vet I took Mo to!!!!!! The assistant also said that it could be his reaction to a stressful situation, she was shocked they did not send home pain meds or antibiotics when I told her he had 2 teeth pulled. Said he might even have an infection going on....I talked with my ex-DIL last night. She had taken her dog to be neutered by this vet and later that evening, she awoke to a blood bath and the dog was almost dead....took him to the vet I will be going to now and he said he did not like that vet at all, said, "You wouldn't believe the people that bring their animals to me to fix what she had messed up" Poor Gizmo, he could have fared worse! Thank you again, all of you!!!! PuddyTat, I would love to know Wilbur's numbers on his bloodwork :)

Whew! Am back from the vet, he spent an hour with me, I am overloaded and overwhelmed with facts! He said he was most likely in pain from the tooth extractions....he was appalled that the other vet didn't give an antibiotic and pain reliever. He went over the blood results with me, Mo's liver and pancreas are functioning well, he gave me some pills for him to take daily that work in the digestive tract to help break up and digest the food better so as to not put so much stress on the kidneys. He wants to do a blood test in a month and see where he is at, he said that the 16% PCV (packed cell volume) could not be right as he would be dead or close to it and he is obviously not! He did mention that he had just been to a seminar in Madison(our capital) at the vet school there and they were talking about the hypertension drug being used for kidney probs, getting more blood circulation to the kidneys. He said we will see what the next blood tests show, then go from there. He said we are not giving up yet! Mo was SO good! And he ate alot of his new food when we got home :) I got the Prescription Diet Kidney dried and canned food. Again I thank you all for your posts, the support has been wonderful!!!
