    Your stepdad did everything he could. Sometimes, though, there comes a time when one cannot cure what's wrong, and the symptoms and effects are clearly causing suffering. When a loved one is suffering in this way, and one can grant nothing more that can restore health, one can grant a merciful, peaceful end to such suffering - a true gift from the heart.

    No other pet will fill the Patches-shaped hole in your stepdad's heart. That place was for her, and her alone. I hope that someday, your stepdad's loving memories of Patches outweigh his grief.
