Changing a kitten's food?

(4 posts)
  1. When I found Avery, I wasn't prepared to bring a kitten home that day, so I went to the store to pick up some supplies and I got her some dry food (Purina One Kitten Formula). After getting on here for some advice and dong some reading, I read a lot of people think that wet food is better for cats. Since she was so small (less than a pound) when I found her, I was scared she would have trouble chewing the dry food so I started mixing The dry food with wet (Iams canned kitten food). Now four months later she will only eat the mixed, she won't touch just dry or just wet... The problem is, the iams food has literally tripled in price in two months and is at least twice the price of other wet foods, which I ridiculous!!! I've always heard that you shouldn't change a cat's food because it upsets their tummy. I know that eventually I will have to switch her from Kitten to Adult cat food, so I'm wondering if I should just wait and switch her to something different then or if it's ok to switch her now... And that also leads to the next question of how old should she be when I switch her to adult food? The vet estimated she was born in late August so she's about 5 months old now.

  2. Sophie was notriously picky about food. When I changed food, I got samples of a few different types of food and left its in front of her and she chose what she liked (the most expensive food!). Maybe you can buy the smallest can of a few wet food recomended by the pet store or vet and see which one she likes?

Just do the change gradually, mix the new wet food with the old wet food, and less and less old until eventually its all the new stuff. I'd try Wellness, or Evo. Both are great kitten brands. Same goes for dry food, mix the new and the old.

In terms of what is better, I feed Sophie both. Sometimes its not possible to feed her wet all the time. I normally give her a tablespoon of wet when I come home at night from work, and I leave dry around all day for her to free feed. She is a perfect weight and very healthy.

Normally you can feed a kitten, kitten food for about a year or so before switching her to adult food.

  3. That's a good idea... I will have to pick up a few different kinds next time I go... The reason I bought the Iams to begin with was because it was the only wet food in the store that said it was specifically for kittens. I saw some the other day (don't remember what brand) that was for kittens or cats so I may try that. I don't think I have seen Evo though, will have to look for it specifically next time. Thanks :))

  4. You don't HAVE to feed them kitten specific wet food. I remember when my bf got his kitten (9 weeks) from the local rescue they were just feeding the kittens wellness chicken wet. We kept them on it the entire them and they are adults now and are fine. Wellness does have a kitten food, but I think the main difference is kitten food is higher in calorie, so if you feed them adult food, just feed them more often?
