  1. i just got a 3 week old kitten on friday night. his mother was pushing them away and not feeding them n whatnot. he has not gone to the bathroom ( #2 ) yet. someone told me that the mother licks them for them to go n to get a soft towel soak it in warm water n rub his bum. i have been doing this since yesterday when i found out. he eats very well but i have not had any luck on the bathroom thing. i dont want him to be in pain or sick, can anyone give me any tips on what i should do for him?

  2. Welcome to TDK Jen516, I've added a pink tag on the top right of the page, click on it and you will find all sorts of poop topics and also about raising young kittens. I do know that kitties don't poop every day but can go 2-3 days without producing. Someone else a bit more knowledgeable than me will post with great advice. Bless you for taking this wee kitty on so early in his life.

  3. Hi, Jenn. Welcome to the Daily Kitten! Helping kittens eliminate is a frequently discussed topic here. If you click on the pink "poop" tag at the top of this page you will find numerous threads and lots of helpful ideas. A video of the technique that seems to be the most successful for stimulating elimination is found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufFWLmpIu08

Good luck with your new kitten. What is his name? Please let us know how this all comes out. ;) We regularly celebrate poop on TDK!!

  5. KW, your advice was more comprehensive. It's been a long time since we had a kitty. Thank goodness we are a great 'family' here with all sorts of knowledge.

  7. Hi, Jenn, welcome to TDK, well, if you think about it, your little one is just taking in liquids/kitten milk replacement at the moment, and only has a wee tummy, so you wouldn't expect a huge amount of poop every day. Keep checking back as we have some very experienced kitty foster mums on here and I'm sure they'll be happy to help with any other problems! One of our kitty moms recommends this site on raising kittens -- it's excellent (and the others here are good too):

    www.messybeast.com/handrear.htm
    http://www.kittenrescue.org/pages.php?pageid=15
    http://www.fanciers.com/cat-faqs/orphans.shtml
    http://www.feralcat.com/raising.html

The first one doesn't show up as a link but type the URL into your browser and it comes up.

Good luck with Kitty! he is very lucky to have you!

  10. *doing the happy poop dance*

We celebrate poop like nowhere else on the net!!!!!

  11. Yay! ! We have POOP! Happy dance.
    We do celebrate poop here.
Give his wee rear end a clean up with a warm wet rag. at such a young age he won't know the niceties of toileting so expect a few more messes. Someone else with a much vaster knowledge of poop will be able to tell you more Jenn.

  13. Ooh, we left the poop dance out of the TDK culture thread -- or did we, my memory's a sieve these days...

  14. Hi Jenn.I'm happy he pooped too. but just in case, could u still try stimulating him with a warm damp cotton ball (cloth is sometimes too rough on the kitten's soft skin) after each meal? I say this because it is possible that he eliminated on an 'overflow' basis. When kitties don't poop/pee for that long, they get plugged and sometimes elimination happens automatically cuz there's just too much for them to hold in. It's not very healthy for the kitty so until you're very sure he's doing it on his own (kitties are supposed to start eliminating on their own anywhere from 3-4 weeks, but I've had a couple who wouldn't go on their own till they were 5 weeks) do stimulate him. I hope he's doing good..

  15. Hi jenn,
I'm having the same issue with my 3 week old kitten.. I'm hoping for a poop today haha :)

I've read so many times to use a cotton ball but you could also try holding the little one up and just wiping over/tickling the area with your index finger (i do this with surgical gloves on!).. I feel like this is probably more gentle and 'real' feeling like the mama cat would do with her tongue. This has worked for me and seems a bit less abrasive than constantly rubbing a cotton ball over the area.

Just another thing you could try...
    Good luck xx
