Bloated vs. full tummies

(2 posts)
  1. Hi again,

Forgive me for the numerous posts about my kittens. Just being a concerned mother.

Would anyone be able to clarify the difference between what a bloated stomach looks like versus a full stomach? My kittens are eating and urinating regularly. They probably poop every other day, but many have said that this isn't a problem because they're on an all-liquid diet and have no solids to pass. However, when they DO poop, it seems rather firm. Again, as I was referring to kitten-care websites, majority of them say that the poop should be a toothpaste consistency. Others have state that it's okay for the poop to be a little firm. As long as it's not watery poop, the kittens are okay.

The thing that I'm concerned with is that my kittens could be constipated. I have come to this conclusion because of their rather firm poop and their big bellies. This is why I would like to know the difference in appearance of a bloated belly or one that is just simply full.

I went out and bought a tube of Laxatone just in case they were in fact constipated. Has anyone had any experience using this product for their kittens/cats? The instructions on the tube only list the dosage for adult cats. The employee at the pet store where I purchased the Laxatone said it should be fine for kittens to use, but in very small quantities. What would you recommend?

  2. Lish, they don't sound constipated to me but I'm not an expert. Are their stomachs hard or soft? If hard and distended, I would be more inclined to worry. You could also try adding a drop or two of vegetable oil to their formula but as long as they are pooping, I personally would not want to start dosing them with chemicals. If you are really worried, a vet check might reassure you. I would also prefer to get the vet's take on whether kittens so tiny should be getting laxatives, rather than the pet-store employee...

    Just looked at: http://www.messybeast.com/handrear.htm

It has good sections on colic, constipation and dehydration and suggests vaseline around their little bottoms to help them avoid straining.
