And the fears never end....

  1. I began using this forum when I lost my baby, O'Malley. Since then, we have welcomed a rescue kitty into our home. Her name is Midnight and she is a mitten-pawed calico; she began showing up at our door back in November and we let her in one day. I made up posters and plastered the neighborhood, and a few days later, her owner contacted us and said she had been missing for two weeks. They cam to get her; they were a young couple and I had a bad feeling, but when they called her by name, she seemed to be happy to see them. Fast forward two weeks later; she was at our door again. We called the owners and the woman matter-of-factly said that "we put her in the basement and I noticed the last time I checked on her that she was gone." GRRRRRR!!!!!! My blood was boiling and I told my family I DID NOT CARE if they came to get her; they weren't getting her back. Needless to say, I didn't have to worry because they never came to get her.

She's sweet girl, very loving and beautiful. She doesn't get along very well with our other cats but they have formed a sort of uneasy relationship. They were very loving and curious about her but she lashed out at them a few too many times and now they're all very wary. She also came back with a bun in her oven - 4 to be exact. They're 2 weeks old now.

O'Malley's mom, Chicken, had another litter of kittens 8 weeks ago....her last. We had thought we got Seamus to the vet in time but apparently not...LOL! We separated him from the girls; he went to stay at my mom's for a couple of weeks, but he apparently practiced his love routine before he went. Not only did he get Chicken, but he got Lucy, too. We have been overrun with kittens! Our official count is 10 right now, from 2 weeks to 8. The oldest ones have been claimed by family members, and the 5 week olds have, too. Now we only have Midnight's brood to find good homes for.

One of the 5 week-olds has a cold right now; it's hard not to go back to that dark place when Malley got sick, but I am taking care of him and clearing his nose and washing his eyes. I gave him a dose of antibiotic this morning, and I have noticed that though he is sleepy, he has nursed well from his mom and did eat some kitten chow this morning. He has mucus coming out of his nose when he sneezes real good, and that frightens me. If I don't see an improvement by tomorrow I will call the vet. Any suggestions would be great....I just need to fears set to rest.

  2. Wow that's a lot of kittens!! I handraised two 3 week old boys who were sneezey and snotty. As long as I kept them warm with a heatpad in their carrier where they also had room to get off the heatpad when they were too warm. I took them to a vet to make sure they weren't dehydrated or anything
I had to give them two courses of the antibiotic and I occasionally mixed their fluids with pedialyte unflavored and they both made it.I also brought them in the bathroom and ran the shower to get a steam up but just be careful they don't get overheated. Also try to stay with the mother's milk and away from KMR because we've heard bad things about it.
So a vet visit in the am for a check up and antibiotic. Good luck!! It seems like you're watching them fine. Others will show up with answers too if you just keep checking back.

  3. The antibiotic knocked him out for a little while, but he's been up and down all afternoon, frequently nursing, too. He's actually been playful in little bursts. His nose is less snotty and he is breathing through it, and his big, azure eyes are clear. (His dad is part-siamese, though he doesn't look it, and Elliot and his half-brother, George ended up with seal point siamese markings and sky-blue eyes.) I am encouraged; he's much stronger than Malley ever was. It just scares the living crap out of me when they get sick. I had a rough road with Morrigan, though she's growing into a beautiful young lady with no problems now.

  4. Just an update.....Elliot is 100% improved today. He is playful and eating and there's no mucus. I still have him on meds and am dosing the other kittens as well, because there are tons of sneezes going on. They all seem just fine otherwise. I think it's just a mild cold.

  7. He really is my little love. Cats are like kids; you really do love them all equally.
