  1. On this day in 1819, the United States settled a border dispute with Spain, which opened the way to creating the state of Florida. The history of Florida is filled with disputes over who owned what. The Spanish first settled it, but for a time the British claimed it as two colonies — East and West Florida. West Florida extended all the way to Louisiana.

    On February 22, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world celebrate World Thinking Day. World Thinking Day was first created in 1926 at the fourth Girl Guide/Girl Scout International Conference. The theme for World Thinking Day 2010 is girls worldwide saying, "Together we can end extreme poverty and hunger."

    On this date in 1997, Scottish scientists revealed that they had successfully cloned a sheep. The animal, dubbed " Dolly," was the first mammal to be cloned and the news set off a feverish debate over the ethics of cloning. Also, in 2006, six robbers in England pulled off the largest bank heist in that nation's history. The elaborate scheme netted the crooks 53 million pounds (approximately $92.5 million US dollars).
