  1. Today in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull announcing the use of the Gregorian calendar. A reformation of the existing Roman calendar, it has become the standard for the majority of the world and the most widely used calendar in history.

    Also today in 1970, National Public Radio (NPR) was founded. A privately supported, not-for-profit membership organization, NPR produces and distributes programming that now reaches a combined audience of 26.4 million listeners weekly.

    On the night of February 24th, 1942, the ' Battle of Los Angeles' took place. Eyewitness reports of an unknown object or objects over Los Angeles, California, triggered a massive anti-aircraft artillery barrage. A photo posted in the LA Times showed nine beams of light converging on an aerial object.
