Kitten Bullying?

  1. Hi

My wife and I have recently fostered some kittens and have noticed a strange behaviour that we can't work out.

Whilst eating, the one and only male kitten will stand on one of the others (I can't think of another way to describe it) and latch on to it's neck. It looks like he starts to suckle but it becomes quite intense and to be honest looks a little weird. The other kittens don't appear to be to concerned with this when it happens but it does stop them from eating

    Any advice or help?

    Thanks

    Johnny

  2. Good evening Johnny, nice to see another Antipodean here. Sorry I can't enlighten you about the young male kittens behaviour. It is rather odd but interesting behaviour. The only thing I can think is that it's the male trying so assert some dominance. It's early morning in the US where most posters live so check back later on as they wake up and check in.

  3. as long as the others are eventually eating all their food, I wouldn't worry too much. The cats will correct each other's behaviour. Play fighting is the way kittens learn appropriate behaviours.

  6. How old are these kittens? Cats usually mature between 5 and 6 months but can do so earlier in the presence of other cats.

The behaviour you have described is similar to mounting. If the kitten is old enough to be neutered it should be done to all you are fostering ASAP.
