  1. Can our NZ litter mates let us know they are all right and safe?

  3. Evening Ginger, I checked our Civil Defence website and they have a warning out. I live on the east coast, in a coastal city and I'm sure the beach areas will be warned. We have tsunami warning sirens and a txt messaging alert system in place here.

#ChileQuake National Warning: Tsunami Threat to NZ Update 6

    01:20HRSNZDT 28 Feb 2010

    Tsunami confirmed

Confirmation has been received that a tsunami was generated from the 8.8magnitude quake in Chile. A wave measuring 2.34 metres was measured in Talcahuano, Chile.

The first wave to arrive in New Zealand will be in the areas around Chatham Islands (Waitangi) at approximately 0705 NZDT, Sunday 28 February 2010. The first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest. Strong currents and unusual tidal effects may continue for several hours.

Scientific advice is that a marine threat (threat to beach and small boats) exists for the entire east coasts of the North and South Islands from Puysegur around to Cape Reinga and extending south to Ahipara. Some land threat also exists with expected wave heights between 1 and 3 metres for the Chatham Islands and Banks Peninsula. Wave height refers to maximum water level relevant to the normal sea level at the beach. This does not take tides into account. Based on historical events it is expected that the greatest wave heights will occur between 6 and 12 hours after the initial arrivals.

The National Crisis Management Centre in Wellington has been activated. The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) and scientific advisors are closely monitoring the situation.

    People in coastal areas should:

    1. Stay off beaches
    2. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
    3. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
    4. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
    5. Follow instructions of your local Civil Defence authorities

    Please do not go sightseeing.

It's 2.30am here at the moment and so it will be some hours before anything arrives on our shores. Thanks for letting us know Ginger.

  4. I was just about to turn off the computer when I saw this (Jasper wanted to come in and then wanted more supper so I got delayed...) So far, they are predicting only 1 extra metre of water on NZ beaches:

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/3384288/Death-toll-rising-from-8-8-magnitude-Chile-quake

But it looks like it might be terrible news for poor Chile. I can't believe another terrible earthquake has happened while people are still suffering in Haiti. I hope that it is not as bad as it looks now.

Thank you, Ginger, for being concerned :)
KK is on the beach but on the west coast of the North Island. MS, I know you will be careful. I am an hour's drive from the east coast beaches, so very unlikely to be affected.

  5. Hope that there is no damage to anyone or anything, be safe.

  6. If it's really 8.8, Deb, that's awful, it's closer to 9 than 8 and the Richter scale goes up exponentially so (as I understand it) 8 is twice as bad as a 7. I hope I've got that wrong though.

Posted 1 year ago by jcat #

  7. Sadly I think you are right about the Richter scale, I hope it was mostly in an unihabitated area.

Posted 1 year ago by AZDEBRA 5/27 & crew #

  8. Deb, I just looked it up on Wikipedia, each increase of 1 on the Richter scale is 10 times worse than the one below it :(

From Wikipedia: earthquakes 7 and above:
7.0-7.9 Major Can cause serious damage over larger areas. 18 per year
8.0-8.9 Great Can cause serious damage in areas several hundred miles across. 1 per year
9.0-9.9 Devastating in areas several thousand miles across.
    1 per 20 years
10.0+ Epic Never recorded; see below for equivalent seismic energy yield.
    Extremely rare (Unknown)

I hope the buildings in Chile manage to stand up to it. Like us they are used to earthquakes so hopefully have built for them.

  9. 1 metre doesn't sound much but it's the force of the wave, that may extend hundreds of miles out into the ocean pushing up onto land and over the land for quite some distances.

  10. Oh Kiwis, stay safe! Is KK in a place that is also away from the coast?? My thoughts are with you as they are with the folks of Chile. When will this all end?

    Posted 1 year ago by mollycat71 #

  11. MC, KK is on the Kapiti coast but that is the west coast, not the east.

I am more worried about the Pacific islands than NZ -- they are much lower to the sea and the Cook Islands have just recently had a devastating cyclone which flattened many buildings. :(

  12. According to one of the news reports, A huge wave reached a populated area in the Robinson Crusoe Islands, 410 miles (660 kilometers) off the Chilean coast, said President Michele Bachelet. There were no immediate reports of major damage there, she added.

  13. It seems like no place is safe in the world. Every place has it problems. Thanks goodness about KK! Yes, you are right the Pacific Islands are in danger.

  14. Prayers are offered for those facing this devistation. It all seems to be a turbulant start to the spring storm season--as this isn't a storm. May all those affected by the earthquake find safety.

  17. These episodes of nature are always so frightening and uncertain. God please protect our dear friends in N.Zealand and all others enduring the effects of the Earthquake and resulting Tsunamis. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  18. Our sweet friend in El Paso who just lost her husband has family (grandparents and other extended family) in Chili. No word from them yet.

  19. Oh WWM...I'm sending prayers to your friend and her family. So much sudden heartache and pain! ARGH!!!!! =(

  20. Just getting reports of small tsunami(30cm) arriving in NZ, no damage from these but there are several more waves of tsunami approaching. The Chtaham Islands, 750km east of NZ have reported a 1.5m wave a short time ago. We are fine here and listening to all emergency reports.

    Posted 1 year ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

  21. Glad to know our friends are safe so far. The quake was 70 miles outside of Concepcion, the 2nd largest city in Chile. Phone lines and communications are down, so it's hard to know exactly what the situation is, but the death and injury toll is climbing by the minute. Seems like we are getting a lot of things like this lately. Prayers go out to all the people affected.

  22. MS, glad that you are doing alright.

Prayers go out to those affected by this earthquake.

  23. Friend I was in class with got a call wee hours of the morning. She lives on a Hawaiin Island and the warning siren's went off. They are being evacuated to higher ground--not enough time to get off the island. The report was it was to hit the island around 2 our time. We have been praying--she and I graduated with our first degree together.

this is the latest report of it hitting Hawaii

  25. This is encouraging--maybe there will be little or no damage. Things can be replaced--I am trying to learn that things have never mattered. If everyone is safe that is the important part. I have a feeling to get much information from Chili will take awhile.

Posted 1 year ago by SoxsMom #

  26. All of NZ is still on alert and a few areas have been put on notice to evacuate. So far all is well but precautions are being taken.

And, as usual, there are many idiots heading to the beach to get 'a good view' and others with their surf boards to take advantage of the waves. Some people never learn, sigh.

  27. More than a little scary...stay safe my friends.

Posted 1 year ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  28. Looks like the big wave surges have passed now. They have been from 30cm(11inches) to one metre(3.2ft). So far no damage or injuries and there shouldn't be as we had plenty of warning. Some roads were closed, trains stopped, shipping moved from ports and sea sports cancelled but that was all. Still the possibility of some out of the ordinary but not huge waves arriving off and on. For us life goes back to normal but not for those Chileans near the quake area. My thoughts for them.

    Posted 1 year ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

  29. Chile was ready for earthquake, Haiti wasn't
Chile has history of dealing with temblors; Haiti's was first in living memory
