2 WEEK OLD KITTEN WON'T POO :(

(5 posts)
  1. I've had my kitten a full week now, he is about 2 weeks old and has opened his eyes 3 days ago. I took him to the vet and was told he seemed healthy, no cleft palate, etc. They then helped me get the right size hole in the baby bottle to feed him and he started drinking a lot and even went poo the very next day! (He hadn't before that). It was a good consistency and the right color, but that was the only time he went! :(

It is now on day 4 since his first and only poo. He pees well, and I stimulate him with a warm, wet washcloth every time after he eats. I called the vet and they said he would be stimulated by the vet and then maybe have some KY put on his butt, but I can do that myself so I don't know if I should bring him in....He's drank KMR kitten formula milk and half goats milk/half water, but is now on the KRM powder formula. Also, his "meow" has become sort of scratchy sounding - is he sick? What's wrong?! I'm so worried!

  2. It wouldn't hurt to have him seen by the vet again - baby kittens can get into big trouble (medically) very fast.

Keep in mind that most small kittens only poop every two to three days. Four days with no poop is pretty long time to go without pooping, but it does happen.

Try the tag I just added (constipation). It has a ton of informative threads attached.

  3. Yes, and try the 'poop' thread as well. It seems like powdered KRM does often constipate little kittens so maybe adding a little more of the half goats milk/half water back to his diet wouldn't hurt. You could also try adding a drop or two of whatever vegetable oil (soy, olive, rice bran, canola) you have in the house to his formula.

I agree with CBM, if you're worried, another vet visit wouldn't hurt. At that age, as CBM says, a kitten can go downhill very quickly. Best of luck with your little one.

  4. You've got some great advice there by both CBM and JCat. Do keep us updated.

  5. I brought him to the bet, with a nice "free first visit" coupon, and he was constipated so she did an enima - poor little Mittens. He has yet to really poop, but hopefully he'll start soon...If not, I will try the vegetable oil. Thanks for your posts!
