Florida Deadliest State for Pedestrians, Cyclists

  2. The article seems really unclear on why the rates are higher. Probably lots of contributing factors, including the fact that you can walk year-round, high tourism making the streets busier than the population density would imply, and possibly the older driving population (the article says that the elderly are not more likely to be hit by cars, but it doesn't say whether the elderly are more likely to hit other people while they're driving). I wonder if Florida comes out any worse than other states once you control for those factors.

  3. I'm making a mental note to never bring my bike to Florida!

    We had a cyclist killed here last year by a guy driving a pickup truck, on an access road so very little traffic, but he was on his cell phone and literally drove over the back of the cyclist. There was no one else on the road, the cyclist was in the proper lane. It should never have happened.

  4. I can't tell you guys how many times I've almost been creamed just trying to cross the street downtown. There's a lot of people riding around with my fist prints in the hoods of their cars. Let's just leave it at that.
