   hi there - i need some help!! my gorjus kitten is about 9 weeks old now and everytime he is sleepy, he starts to try and suckle on my eyelids!! i have pulled him away and he just rushes back to doing it, he seems very happy while doing this. we have another kitten - his sister from the same litter who doesnt do this at all. im wondering why he does this and if its natural? thanks!!

   I haven't had a kitten this small in a very long time. Do you play with him to tire him out before bedtime? That might help. Maybe firmly move him away and give him an alternative. Maybe a little stuffed animal? Just some thoughts. More will chime in as the evening progresses.

   Suckling for a kitten is very similar to a human baby using a pacifier or a blankie. Some need the extra comfort, some don't. It is natural. We've (TDK) heard of cats who suck on fingers, hair, earlobes, stuffed toys, etc.

   Obviously he views you as his mama and he finds it comforting to be near you. That's not all bad.

   You probably aren't going to convince him not to suckle but you can probably substitute something that's less painful for you. Offer him a variety of other stuff including a (human)premie-sized bottle nipple, a stuffed toy or a small blanket. When he starts to suck on your eyelid, slide the substitute between his lips and your eye. Eventually, he'll find something else that does the trick for him.

   thanks for that! ill definately try buying him a bottle nipple or something. its frustrating because were trying to lie in bed and id love it for him to lie there next to me and curl up but hes forever going for the eyes and is very persistant.
   how old are they when they are meant to be taken from their mother? both our kittens were tiny when we got them - i couldnt believe it.

   yes thats what i wake to as well, can be handy at times!! :) but his tongue is so rough that it hurts haha

   You might also look at PetSmart, they carry a surrogate mama cat, stuffed animal with nipples and I think a heart beat. Might redirect the kitten.

    Hi, Milo and welcome to TDK! We used to have a kitty named Willie who would nurse on any available earlobe. It was so sweet..... and so messy!
