On March 3, 1925, the U.S. Congress authorized the carving of a monument and established the purpose for Mt. Rushmore State Park: "a memorial commemorative of our national history and progress." It was decided that the individuals who best exemplified the foundation, expansion and preservation of the nation — Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt — should be the subjects of the memorial.
Volume 1, Number 1 of Time magazine was published on March 3, 1923. Among the items: A fragment of a congratulatory message sent by Thomas Edison to the man who broke the world's helicopter record in Dayton, Ohio. The machine had remained in the air two minutes and 45 seconds at a height of 15 feet.
