NEED Advice on URI's

(14 posts)
  1. I have yet another situation here developing w/my Winnie. Well, really,it's her & Lacy since they both share the same air space & food/water dishes. It seems Winnie has developed a resporatory problem. Deep, snorty sounding breathing. I'm assuming it's an URI but have never had this problem,ever,w/all the ferals I've had in my yrs. I've been dealing w/some serious depression & some health/physical issues that are keeping me laying down for most of any 'spare time' I'm lucky to have so it's some real added stress to what I'm already dealing with.
I don't know how she could've caught it since her & Lacy are pretty much secluded from the rest of the house pack & none of them go outside. No other cats are showing any signs of a problem.I did just in the past week & a half vacuum the entire house (moving all the furniture as well to do it) of all the D-Earth I had dusted the house w/over the week before. I'm alittle nervous that the D-Earth might've agrivated it (if even possible).
I have absolutely Nothing in the house I can give them except powdered Amoxicillin (put in their wet food) twice a day.My question...amI wasting my time & the Amoxicillin by dosing them w/it? Will this antibiotic even work for an URI? A vet visit is out of the question. Zero funds for it. Please...I know alot of you have dealt w/this sort of infection w/your own furkits. Any info you could hand down to me from your own experience w/this would be so appreciated & may pull Winnie & Lacy out of this w/your expertise.

    Thanks in advance my Family!

Looks like most causes are viral. Unless you have a green discharge, I'd curb the antibiotics.

  3. Thanks Ailur for quickly responding. The only things I can see in that info that could've brought on anything of this magnatude would be the stress factor from Useless & his tantrums (which they are protected from thru closed doors) or the ventilation situation. The weather has been intollerable here with the only heat source for the 2 cats & myself are a portable heater (in my closed -door room. The only other heat source because Useless is a cheap-a** is the pellet stove which is on the opposite side of the house. I've tried to keep the window in the room cracked at all times but,it's been cold & constantly wet & raining for weeks here now.
I don't know what to do at this point if the Amoxicillin is of no use giving them. Thanks again tho for responding & the link.

  4. O.K. Try for clean dry bedding for the cats. Do not use Lysol on or around the kittyes' bedding, but it kills viruses so a wipe down and thorough rinse of food dishes, toys and litter-boxes may help. If you do not have Lysol then a white vinegar or bleach soak followed by thorough rinsing to get rid of the smell. Pray for spring and warmer weather.

  5. I seem to recall having read somewhere that D.E can be harmful to animals if they inhale it. Is there perhaps a chance that your cat might have inhaled some of it?

  6. Well...I wash their wet food dishes twice a day & that goes for the outdoor ferals as well. Their kibble dishes don't get cleaned so often & I just add kibble as it gets low or empty. Winnie & Lacy share a litterbox between them & have for several yrs. now. It's one of the cement mix trays from Home Depot. Altho I can no way afford to empty it completely & fill it w/new litter,It gets cleaned no less than once a day & sometimes twice if my arthritis will allow it. They both sleep all over the room in several spots a day. The bedding or towels get changed every week. Altho I smoke...I haven't smoked in the room in yrs. I remove myself from the area to do that.

rubster...even tho I've had nothing but positive results from using the D-Earth (inside & out)...after this last dusting,I worried because I had to do it alittle thicker & I let it stay on a couple more days than usual before I vacuumed it up. And I was much more thorough this time in that I removed all the furniture that I could lift anyways,so I could vacuum all of the edging & thorughly vacuum the carpeting.

I've done everything I can think of the right way (excepts empty their litterbox & scrub it thoroughly & often. Finances & my arthritis make that a very rare occurence. But I find it very hard to believe that it would be the culprit to what started this wheezing problem w/Winnie.

That's why I'm looking to you guys for some good old fashioned home made options I can try. Everything I've read on this problem (whether it's URI or possibly asthma related) points to vet. And I'm praying that isn't necessary because it's not possible at this time w/me trying to get help from the state & federal resources. That's been a complete nightmare & I'm only past the 1st dr. appt.
Anyways...I thank you for any responses you can add. I will check occasionaly thru the night when I can. {{{HUGS}}} for your suggestions.

  8. Susie, when Gabriel had a URI last year, the vet suggested putting him in the bathroom and let the hot water from the shower run. That should help with some congestion. I have to admit that I did not do that because the meds he was given helped right away. But, that might help a bit.

  9. Thanks Dee...I'm not sure how she'll react to it but I'm willing to try anything that might help me determine whether she can get over this w'just my help alone. Not being a vet,I can only do so much. I'm not even sure if it's a URI or possibly asthma or even something as simple as a cold. Whatever is going on has not slowed her energy level down. The bags & dark circles under my eyes every morning will tell you that. :(

  10. bump......

Dee...I went to try the shower steam but Mr.Useless being the a** he is b***ed about the 'hot water' being used up to get it steamy enuf in the bathroom. I guess all I can do is keep her on the Amoxiciilin I have left & watch for drafts in the room.
When I informed Useless that she was fradually getting worse, all he sickmind could think of was...so are you going to do the same to her as you did to Binky? No words how depressed that made me.

Still looking for some home remedies that might help Winnie kick this.

  11. Susie, I read up on the D-earth and with prolonged use it can bother your airways, mucous membranes etc. I experienced that myself when I put it down for the bed bugs over a longer period of time. I had some trouble breathing and some wheezing. It got better a few days after I vacuumed up the D-earth.
Is Winnie eating? When Mi had his, he couldn't smell his food and wouldn't eat, so I had to put smelly tuna water over everything so he could smell it and would eat.
Have you ever tried lysine powder to help their immune systems? I used that for Mi when he was little and sick.

  12. Susie, who cares what he says? Just walk in there with her and pretend that you are taking a hot shower and shut the door! I can't imagine that he would complain if you are taking a hot shower. Besides, why would he think that spending money on hot water would be more costly than spending money on a vet...or lots of other remedies?

  13. Susie, I just checked the daily quote that I get in my email each day. I think it was kismet today...a perfect quote for what you are dealing with in your life.

“Care no more for the opinions of others, for those voices. Do the hardest thing on earth for you. Act for yourself. Face the truth.”

  14. Hi GD...she is eating fine. I'm also dosing her & Lacy both w/Amoxiciilin that I have left. Lacy stopped coughing but, this breathing thing w/Winnie worries me. It's been going on for a few weeks now. Sometimes when she gets irritated or annoyed she will make a grunt noise quietly under her breath. I thought at first it was what she was doing. After laying w/her rolled up next to me several nights,I noticed it wasn't her grunting but a sort of a wheezing/chest congestion type noise. It's been a week since I thoroughly vacuumed in there & she's still doing it & more often. As for lysine,I've heard & read many of you mentioning it here but, on a very serious note, I can't afford bubble gum,let alone anything from the stores for any of them. Hence...the request for home remedies.
Useless has been throwing his tantrums around (yesterday on my b-day) & even worse this morning. He's so desperate to pi** me off that he dismantled the car he'd given me to drive & even stooping to taking the coffee & coffee maker out of the kitchen & hiding it in his room. He thinks he's playing some kind of contest by stating stupidness like...he's not going to let me win. He said he was cutting off any & all money being given for the cats. I don't know where he's at thinking that way but, I'm having to deal w/it all until I can leave. I've also had the pleasure of finding out that my neighbor(name unmentioned) has now released 2 cats into the park fromanother colony in town b-cuz the property owner was trapping them & removing them. Those 2 are now stealing half of what's put out for Hissy & her 2 kits.
It's a lose-lose situation for the cats & only more stress on me as I'm still waiting to go to 1 more appt. for the state & federal help I've been trying to get.

Dee...I know that what you share is pertinent to staying focused. But w/my depression & the pressure going on here...it's only going way out of the ballpark for me emotionally right now. I do thank you tho for the quote.
