Hey all just wanted to keep you all updated on my knee problems. Last Monday workmans compensation finally OK'd the surgery 10 months later! I went to the orthopedist tonight and he explained the whole procedure to me... It will be arthroscopic surgery he will make 3 small incisions in my knee and repair the meniscus he will also go under the knee cap and shave the damaged cartilage there. I will be walking on the leg later that afternoon??? I will miss about a month of work but will be paid because this is a compensation case!
I am scared I will not lie! but I just can't wait till this knee doesn't hurt anymore!
I'll keep you all updated
Peace and Prayers

{{{hugs}}} Dorie. At last you get the surgery you really need and under worker compensation. That's great. Yes you are scared but there is an entire basketful of TDKers right behind you with Positive Vibes for your surgery.
PS, it's so great to see you posting, I have missed you.Posted 1 year ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

Dorie,
They are right - you will be walking by that afternoon. However, you will also be looking for the doctor so you can wring his neck. I've had three arthroscopic knee surgeries (and one total replacement). It is going to be painful to start with, but the pain is very controllable with meds. And the relief after you heal is fantastic.
One thing you want to do is to make sure you have ice bags on hand. Get two so you can rotate them. Don't forget to ice the back of your knee. (My routine is 20 mins on the front, 20 mins on the back of the knee, 20 minutes of chocolate while the ice bag gets cold again.)
Make sure you have a couple of comfortable places to sit with your leg elevated, the remote and a handful of books close by.
The single most important thing I've learned throughout my many orthopedic problems is: GO TO PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF TIME YOUR INSURANCE PAYS FOR, and do whatever exercises you learn at home.

Glad to hear you're getting it fixed. Make sure your azalea bushes are all trimmed so you don't have any falls over them!

Dorie, I have had 2 knee reconstructions and 2 "scope" procedures. Piece of cake, no worries. Pain meds work great. I agree that do every single moment of pt that you can. It is hard at first but boy, does it work. Keep the ice handy. If you run out use frozen peas. Really. I had them as back up's. This surgery works. I promise but you must do the pt! It is hard but worth it. I have no problems with my knees. I was in pretty bad shape, was "fixed" then managed to have an accident and mess up all the good work. They fixed me again and it worked great. Best of luck! I know that you will be just fine!

Dorie, yes ice is good. But even better are the happy drugs so make certain that they give you those! And you're going to feel so much better to not have that pain in your knee. You'll be amazed how fast you will recover!

Had arthroscopic meniscus surgery done in 2003... yep - do the PT ! I was instructed on some exercises to do as soon as I got home. I did them. Did it hurt? Yep.. but was worth it. Surgery was done outpatient. Now? Pain free and can hula all night long. LOL Keep us posted... I'll be sending positive and healing energies.

I've had this surgery, on both knees. My left knee though, was different. I had broken my kneecap sometime in my life, and the doctor removed a piece of it, and oh my....I felt SO much better! Both my knees used to just 'give out' when I was growing up and I'd fall right down and not know what had happened, except that my knees would hurt.
The therapy exercises afterwards are essential. It will hurt, but not for very long. I found the most awkward part was sleeping, I had to keep my knee braced with a pillow underneath it :-)

I know you will do great. As a Rehab Dept Director here, you better do PT or I am sending Emma and the whackbonk sticks to get you there. Its so important right after surgery to get everything working again. It would be a real problem if everything "locked up" after surgery and I have seen that. Then you really will be in a world of hurt. Get the happy drugs and let us do the praying. We are behind you 100%

Dorie, no worries you'll be fine. I don't have any advice to offer just hugs and prayers.
When I had knee surgery they weren't doing arthroscopic yet, so I have a nice long scar on my left knee.

Dorie, sending tons of healing white light to you. I know it works 'cause all the white light and prayers helped my Bob. Then you will be pain free. I don't know anything helpful on the knee surgery but for my bunion surgery, ice was a lifesaver! Missed you! {{Dorie}}

Dorie, you can make your own ice packs. Take a ziplock bag and fill it 3/4 way with water and add a good splash of rubbing alcohol or vodka. Seal and freeze. The alcohol keeps it from freezng solid so it stays mushy. You can make a good supply and just keep rotating them in and out of the freezer as they thaw. If you own a vacuum seal machine that works even better at making ice packs. When my friend Pooh ruptured her achilles tendon last summer, we made her up 4 of those packs and they worked perfectly.
