Update on Gizmo

  1. Hi Everyone, I took Gizmo for blood work yesterday, and I guess any hope I had has been dashed :( He lost a pound in 5 weeks, one of his kidney values was worse than last time and his RBC are alarmingly low. Again, both vets I saw were puzzled at his numbers and how he presented. The one said it was a very interesting case. He was put on a low dose of blood pressure med to bring more blood flow to the kidneys and he was given an iron supplement. The vet also said that they would never have anesthesized him for his teeth cleaning had his values been that bad, they would have done the blood work FIRST...well, I regret that, but it is done and I can't go back and change it. And he was so good about the blood draw from his jugular vein, so it's not like he would have fought the first vet who screwed up. The vet said 'your guess is as good as mine as to how long he has' I feel very sad, but all I can do is love him every day he is here, I can't change what is. Any thoughts or prayers for him you could muster, I sure would appreciate :)

  2. Sending prayers for Gismo right now. How is his behavior otherwise? Is he enjoying life? Extra cuddles and skritches come highly recce.

  3. Yes, PJ, he seems very happy and content! That is what is so puzzling for the vets, also. Oh I forgot to mention that the vet said I should watch for him doing open-mouthed breathing/panting, that means he is fighting for oxygen. I will not let him suffer no matter how badly I want to keep him with me, I couldn't bear to see him that way. Either way isn't easy, is it?

  4. {{{Gizmo and Katthays}}} You are such a good kitty mom, KH. I'm glad that Gizmo is in good spirits and no distress; like you said, all you can do is love him as long as that's the case and then, when it's no longer the case, do the best and kindest thing you can for him. Hard to think about, I know, so put it aside for now and give him an extra hug from me.

  15. Thank you....the only thing I have noticed is he isn't eating quite as much perhaps....and the pound he lost proves it....but all in all, so far, he seems content. I wonder if he is doing so well because I have told him that he needs to fight and stay strong cos I don't want him to leave :( He sure does love his Meowmy :)

  18. Katt, add my prayers for Gizmo. It is hard when we know are friends are so sick. Love him up, try to get him to eat and treasure every minute you get. You never know, he may be one of those cats that can just go on and on with wonky numbers. I've seen it in people so why not cats. My mother in law, for years lived with a BP that was so low that the doctors didn't know how she wasn't in a coma, much less living a vital life. And my friend's father has lived for 40 years with a heart that barely functions. This fall he had another series of heart attacks (17 of them in a short period and had to have CPR after every one) and they said he wasn't going to make it. Well guess what. He is back home, going to PT and hanging in there with no loss of brain function, only loss of some strength. We'll keep thinking positive thoughts for MO and hope for the best.

  20. Good thoughts and white light for both you and Gizmo, KH. My prayers are with you. Like many of us TDKrs, I've been down this road and the signposts are different for every traveler. Enjoy your time together and know that, whatever happens, you'll be together again some day.

  21. Thank you all so much :) I had a pkg. of salmon, which Mo decided he really liked :) No canned for this boy! I know I have to cherish each day, I have to admit that it is hard for me to not worry about tomorrow, but I guess one is never too old to grow and learn.

  22. ((((Katthays and Gizmo))) I'm so sorry about the bad news. I'm praying for little Giz, and for you as well. I'm glad to hear he's still happy and enjoying life.
Can the vet give you some high-calorie wet food for him? I got some for Mi when he was a baby, to fatten him up.

  23. I'm so sorry to hear the news from the vet. We have lost three cats to chronic renal failure and each one is different. Ask the vet about subQ fluids, KD or a similar kidney-kind food, Vit B, and Procrit or Epogen.

Our babies responded well to all the above. It didn't cure them, but it gave them 1 to 3 years of happy, pain free life before we had to make that hard decision for each one.

  24. {{{KH}}} Not the news we were hoping for. Savor each day...

  26. Oh, katthays... Pls be strong for Gizmo's sake... He wants you to be happy with him, as he is happy with you. I sure hope he will still live for years and years with you. Hope his low numbers will elevate too..

  27. Just catching up this morning with this thread....I will inquire about the high-calorie wet food, but knowing how finicky Mo is, if it doesn't taste great, he won't touch it. He is on the K/D dry food, and has the wet, but he hates the wet. Interesting about the Vit. B, Procrit and Epogen....I will ask. Everyday is different with him, when he has good days and eats well, I am as high as a kite :), but on not so good days, I get down.....it's an emotional roller-coaster as you well know! Thanks so much for your input :)

  28. I can't add much to the comfort others are offering, but they're right... treasure each day, love him lots, keep your eyes on him and you'll know when the time comes. Love is so strong that it can work miracles where modern medicine and sense can't explain it. Obviously he loves you and wants to be with you, that's very clear.

Give the baby what he'll eat, love him up.... and treasure each moment. What a good kitty meowmy you are!
