Today is the feast day of St. Patrick, one of Christianity's most widely known figures. The first recorded celebration of St. Patrick's Day in the American colonies was in Boston in 1737, and the first St. Patrick's Day celebration in New York City was held at the Crown and Thistle Tavern in 1756.
Camp Fire USA (originally Camp Fire Girls) was founded on this date in 1910 by Luther Gulick, M.D., and his wife, Charlotte, in Vermont, as the first nonsectarian organization for girls in the United States. In 1975, membership was expanded to include boys. Dr. Gulick chooses the name "Camp Fire" because campfires were the origin of the first communities and domestic life.
