Today in History (March 17)

(3 posts)
  1. Today is the feast day of St. Patrick, one of Christianity's most widely known figures. The first recorded celebration of St. Patrick's Day in the American colonies was in Boston in 1737, and the first St. Patrick's Day celebration in New York City was held at the Crown and Thistle Tavern in 1756.

Camp Fire USA (originally Camp Fire Girls) was founded on this date in 1910 by Luther Gulick, M.D., and his wife, Charlotte, in Vermont, as the first nonsectarian organization for girls in the United States. In 1975, membership was expanded to include boys. Dr. Gulick chooses the name "Camp Fire" because campfires were the origin of the first communities and domestic life.

  2. Today in Strangeness:

On March 17, 1845, Stephen Perry patented the first rubber bands. And on this date in 1948, William Gibson, the prescient sci-fi writer who coined the term cyberspace, was born in South Carolina.
