If you must use these products be very careful. When ever possible use the Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth for pest control.

  3. I have a question. How do I know I'm getting food grade Diatomaceous Earth? The box of it we bought doesn't say anything on it about being food grade. Does this mean I have the wrong type. When Jeff went to buy it he asked for food grade and what he came home with doesn't say one way or the other if it is or isn't food grade. =(

  4. Does the product label have any other ingredients listed? Does the label have instructions for use as a pool filter?

Food Grade should say "Food Grade" on the label. Other grades are courser and may have additives such as chlorine for pool use. If it is 100% DE you should be ok.

I found a bit more information here

    baalmaiden -
Have used it for years, and never thought about it's make-up until your thread - Thank you.
Found out this though, "Make sure the DE you use is AMORPHOUS DIATOMACEOUS EARTH (ADE). In an article on DE in COMMON SENSE PEST CONTROL QUARTERLY, published by BIRC, Volume III, Number 1, Winter 1987, the matter of safety is explored. We quote:

"Both swimming pool grade and natural diatomaceous earth come from the same fossil sources but they are processed differently. The natural grades are mined, dried, ground, sled and bagged. The pool grade is chemically treated and partially melted and consequently contains crystalline silica which can be a respiratory hazard. Thus, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ONLY NATURAL DIATOMACEOUS EARTH BE USED FOR INSECT CONTROL. This noncrystalline silica is not a hazard as the human body apparently can dissolve it. "

"Silicosis refers to lung contamination and irritation by crystalline of free silica (Si02). Crystalline describes the orientation of the Si02 molecules which occur in a fixed pattern in contrast to the non periodic, random molecular arrangement defined as amorphous. Exposure to free silica is an occupational hazard to workers. "

    Step Two:

Make sure the DE you use meets World Health Organization (WHO) safety standards. WHO cautions that DE with a crystalline silica content over three percent (3%) is dangerous for ingestion by humans or animals. Safe Solutions, Inc. DE has less than 1% free silica. Swimming pool DE ranges from 60% to 70% free silica."

  5. I have a nest of spiders that hatched. I have DE and used it in the attic--seems to be working! I really try to live with my 8 legged friends--if they stay outside. They actually will not stay if there is no food source and they really control the fly issue. Remember I live in a town with SEVERAL dairies--we have a few flies. I also have a cat that loves a spider chase. The DE is helping to eliminate the spiders--and allowing my family to sleep! Deuter got one last night in the living room--he bats the thing around a little. Hubby ruined his fun and killed the spider.

  6. My DE doesn't have any mention of swimming pools and the Active Ingredients: Silicon dioxide from ditomaceous earth....85.0%
    Other elemental oxides....................10.0%
    Moisture...................................5.0%

It's made for indoor/outdoor use and kills cockroaches, ants, fleas, silverfish & earwigs
There are warnings for humans & pets not to get into eyes or breath it into the lungs.

Thanks Ailuro for all the info. You Rock! =)

  7. Sounds like you have a food grade type. At least there is no clorination or other additives. Is there any mention of calicnated or crystaline silica content? You are looking for less than 1%. Anything marked than 3% is would be acceptable but the <1% is the safest.

Go a head with careful dusting and you can research your brand further before your next purchase and if you are not satisied with the labeling change to a different brand next time.

Even the good stuff should not be heavily inhaled.
