READING, WRITING, AND RIDICULOUS 'RITHMETIC: Manitoba, Canada's, New
Democratic Party has urged teachers not to lower student grades when
assignments are turned in late as part of the province's unwritten "no
fail" policy, which is opposed by 76 percent of province adults. Such
reduced grades are not "an accurate indicator of what the student has
learned or achieved," former education minister Peter Bjornson argued
in a letter, which is apparently being supported by other NDP
politicians. "Marks should reflect the student's achievement," Bjornson
continued, "and should not be distorted as a result of work habits,
attitudes or behaviours." (Winnipeg Free Press) ...Those who agree with
the suggestion are invited to vote for their favorite candidate the
morning after election day.

Late Papers

I have to add that I take 20% off for any late paper. I also put any student that doesn't turn their work in on time in lunch detention until I have the paper. Why in the world would we want to reward students that don't do their work on time? That would be like a paralegal stating to the lawyer--"Yeah I'll get on that and turn it in sometime--when I have time." Can you imagine!

I agree SM... I'm sure there can be extenuating circumstances for some which I feel should make the rules flexible but it had better be a provable, legitimate excuse. Deadlines are something we all must live with throughout our lives and the kids had better learn to respect that or they're in for a rude awakening. Just ask the IRS for one!! =)

Sure there are extenuating circumstances! If they are absent or (this just burns me) suspended they have at least one day for every day they are gone to get things turned in to the teacher. I also meet with students, because there are times they just don't get it and need help. I tell them to turn in what they have done and we go over it together. I give help and they have the work as homework. That isn't counted late. I just don't like the students that say--I'll get to it eventually.
