  1. hey all. I haven't been here in a while, but I thought I would make an update that Aerie and Izzy have a new friend. I fell in love with a little polydactyl kitten at the pet store where I work and needless to say I gave in after three days of working with him staring at me and meowing every time I walked by and reaching out through the bars to me. He never did this with anybody else mind you, only me and so I figured that it was a sign that he was supposed to come home with me.

His name is Dante and he's a fluffy black and white kitten with gorgeous green eyes and extra toes on his front feet. He's a huge cuddle muffin and Izzy and Aerie are getting along with him surprisingly well.

Dante is from the SPCA and is all fixed, vaccinated and microchipped, but I notice that he sneezes a few times throughout the day. He's perfectly fine otherwise, runs and jumps and plays with the rest of them and eats like a little pig so I'm not too worried about it, but nevertheless I did make a vet appointment for him to be seen next week. But while we're waiting for the vet appointment I was wondering if anyone might have a few suggestions.

There is no discharge coming from his eyes and nose, he's using the litter box regularly with no problems there, like I said he eats like the little porker he is and plays and everything. He's a perfect little bundle of fluff aside from the sneezing.

Aerie and Izzy haven't started showing any symptoms and I've had Dante for about a week now. Izzy and Aerie are all up to date on their vaccinations and both have been tested and found negative for Feline Leukemia virus, Aerie was just tested this past wednesday and found negative and this was after she had been around Dante. The vet said that Aerie and Izzy were perfectly healthy and he had no reason to be concerned about either of them.

Just wondering if any of you have had experience with a sneezing kitty such as my little Dante?

  3. Hi Mepayne,I've had cats that just have been sneezy and been ok but seeing that your new kitty has come from a cattery which is high risk for kitty uri's i would take him to that vet's appointment. Watch him in the meantime to make sure he doesn't get sick.
And congrats to Dante on his new human :)

  4. When I got my kittens they were both sneezy (my little girl Lucy was more so than her brother August). They also both had a tendency to get dry black boogers in their noses.

Through my research & asking questions on here and talking to my vet I learned that kittens are highly susceptible to a number of viruses that cause these symptoms(some from the herpes & chlamydia family- but not transferable to humans), and for the most part a healthy kitten will grow out of it. Their immune systems will knock the virus out. It takes a while though- it took several weeks before my little ones stopped sneezing entirely (although the frequency of the sneezing attacks steadily tapered off), and Lucy will still occasionally get boogers @ 8 months now.

As long as Dante's healthy - eating, drinking, playing, active - I don't think you need to worry too much about him. It sounds like his sneezing's pretty mild.

What you need to look out for with these viruses is secondary infections, goopy eyes, or any change in activity level or eating (according to my vet when a kitten gets a URI it's usually a secondary infection). My vet offered to put my kittens on preventative antibiotics to keep them from getting any secondary infections, but I declined because they were sturdy and healthy, and I didn't want to give them unnecessary meds. Lucy did get an eye infection at one point, but I caught it early & a little eye ointment cleared it right up.

So good luck! And congratulations on the new addition to the family. I'm glad the older siblings are getting along with him!

  5. I had a similar situation when I adopted my second kitten. He was fine at first but then he started sneezing all the time. I took him to the vet and he just had a virus. He got better on his own within a couple weeks.

  6. trust me, there's NOTHING wrong with his activity level, my lack of sleep prooves it and the empty dishes when I got up means he was a little pig last night. And at the present moment, he has swiped a toy mouse from poor Aerie who is looking at me as if to say "Mooom!" and he's tossing it around in front of her, he's such a bully haha.

He's going to the vet on tuesday for a post-adoption check up, if he's still sneezing then I'll ask about it but Aerie and Izzy are still sneeze free, well except for this morning when Aerie shoved her nose in the water dish and inhaled a bit of water. She sneezed then a few times, but she had a perfectly valid reason to do so. I'm going to get Dante checked just to be safe, but it doesn't seem like there's anything that can be done because he hasn't got any secondary infections going on, just the sneezing. Either way, better safe than sorry right?

  7. Definitely, MP! My Milo had an URI when I first got him and that's fairly common in newly adopted kittens who've spent time with lots of other cats in close proximity. One thing you may want to try, in lieu of antibiotics, is lysine powder. I used that with my Milo and it helps their immune system so they can better fight off viruses and such. I got it online, but I believe you may find it at some stores as well.

Best of luck and good wishes for Dante. Let us know how he's doing!
