  1. Hey this is Kristin again! Thank you for you wonderful suggestions! Elroy doesn't cry at night anymore and sleeps almost the whole night through. The day after we adopted Elroy, we took him to the vet, he got his first shot (boy, that was fun!), and he got his flea medication since he was covered in them. The next day, his fleas all fell off and suddenly he was a new kitten! He ate solid food, drank water, and went potty all for the first time since we got him! He loves sleeping in my arms (and my husband's) and purrs so loud you can hear it from across the room. The 3rd day he was still terrified of the living room so we moved his bed, litter box, food, and toys to the closet in our office. He has full reign of the office, but likes to retreat to the small confined closet. The 4th day he decided that the living room really wasn't that bad, and he explored all afternoon. Then he discovered the curtains. Not good, although hilarious! I haven't laughed so hard in my entire life! Our whole house is tile, so when he is running around and makes a sharp turn, he slides a couple feet on his belly :) Also, the tile is so shiny that Elroy can kind of see his reflection, so he attacks the tile. I love it! So there you have it! He is your typical trouble-making kitten! As a side note, is there some way to prevent him from chewing on cords, climbing curtains, and clawing the furniture? I've heard of things you can spray on your furniture, but do they work?

  2. Awwww, yay for Elroy! Good job giving him a smaller space that he can hide out in, kitties like that. They also like to take over everywhere and climb curtains! :) *scritches for adorable Elroy*

I just tried a product called Bitter Yuck on one of our plants that George likes to chew on; it doesn't seem to have made any difference with him, but I think some people have had success with that or a product called bitter apple.

Elroy is so cute, I just want to smooch him.

  4. Hi Kristin, I missed your intro thread, so a belated welcome from me :o)

Elroy is vereeeeeee cute, you should submit that picture to Kittenmaster for consideration for the main page.

I always say you can have nice furniture...or cats!! (I have four fuzzbutts, and a tatty at the edges house!). But some people manage both. I have managed to get 3 of mine to understand "no" when sternly talked to, but only after they've started scratching. Good luck, look forward to hearing more about life with Elroy.

  5. Cats hate citrus so you can spray the curtains with lemon juice and put some on the cords. You need a scratching post; when he starts to scratch the furniture take him and put him at the post (rub some catnip on the post) and put his paws on it. When he misbehaves you can try "scruffing" like a mama cat does; grab him behind his neck, push down gently and hiss.

  6. Thank you for your ideas! I will try some citrus today to see if that works. He has a scratching post, so when we starts to scratch the furniture, I have tried telling him no and putting him on the scratching post. Then he rolls all over it and nuzzles it and falls asleep :) Lol, he'll get it someday. He did the cutest thing today, by the way! I was cuddling with him on the couch after breakfast, and he started suckling the sleeve of my shirt and kneading my shoulder! I'm not sure if a 9 week old kitty should still think he should suckle, but it melted my heart!

  8. A belated welcome to TDK, Kristin and Elroy. Elroy sounds like a lot of fun!

I'm having quite the time trying to get my three-year old Bob to stop scratching the couch. I put tape on the corners and that's stopped him a bit. You can also try "soft claws" from the pet store. They're rubber (I believe) things that go over your cat's claws so they can't scratch things.

As for sucking on your shirt, Bobby started sucking on my neck after I'd had him for about a week (he was 11-12 weeks at the time). It hurt, so I put a blanket over my neck and he started sucking on that. Three years later, he still sucks on the blanket at least every other day! It's something he enjoys doing, and as he only does it when I'm sitting with the blanket, it's something I enjoy with him. I think he uses it for comfort, too - I have noticed if he's not feeling well or is upset about something, he does it more often - up to 5-6 times a day. Silly boy :)
