good age for deworming?

  1. hey all. Puck is doing great but I am worried because he was a barn cat he could possibly have worms. what age is good for him to go for his deworming? he is a little over 3 weeks

  2. Chances are he does have worms. It depends on the severity of the problem - the worms absorb the nutrition from their food, so it might look like their bellies are nice and round, but their bone-structure still looks skinny. It can seriously stunt their growth if they dont get treatment for it, sometimes kitties poop live worms (I've never had that), I've just seen worm eggs in poop. Generally vets dont like to deworm before age 6 weeks as dewormers do contain toxins that can be harmfull. My vet has dewormed kittens as young as 2 weeks for me, but he did it himself, after weighing them on two different scales to get the exact weight so he could calculate the right amount of medicine to give to them, it was like .02cc's of fluid medication. The kitties were suffering from constant diahrrea, which didnt respond to medication at all, and the deworming was really the last option of treatment for them at that age. I would have a vet evaluate him and let the vet decide when it is necessary to deworm.

  3. I agree with Skyron, call the vet and see what they say. I called my vet when I first got Roxy and I knew she had tapeworms and she was 6 weeks old and about 1 pound. Roxy wasn't acting lethargic and she was eating normally but I didn't want the worm problem to escalate because my vet said unless she was very sick, she would have her first vet checkup in three weeks when she got her shots. My vet wont do the first booster shots until 9 weeks. Anyways, for $2 the vet gave me a quarter of a pill of Droncit. I called on a Saturday and the emergency receptionist picked up, asked me the questions about Roxy's weight and age and then called my vet and asked him what to do. I gave it to her that night and it did the trick. I heard you can deworm a pregnant cat but I would still ask your vet since Puck is so young.

  4. are the deworming kits you can get at pet stores ok to use, or should only the vet do it?

  5. He's too young to even think about de-worming, honey. I would let the vet do the deworming.

  7. Take the baby to the vet and get it done there.
